If there’s one thing that fast food chains love to do, it’s go to their bookshelves (if they have bookshelves), pick up a dusty tome of discontinued products (if they have a dusty tome of discontinued products), and point at one, instructing the development team to bring it back (if they have fingers, and development teams – which they definitely do). Unfortunately, though, they don’t always get it right.

We saw that a couple of months ago when KFC brought back its Twister, to the…muted response of customers. Now, Taco Bell’s done the same thing, and people aren’t exactly thrilled. Oh dear. Let’s discuss.

Taco Bell’s Enchirito: Swing And A…Miss?

The returning menu item in question is its Enchirito, which hasn’t been on Taco Bell menus since 2023. Okay, they didn’t have to go back that far in their clearly-very-real dusty tomes to find this one. In case you’d forgotten, the Enchirito was (and is) a burrito filled with beef, refried beans, and diced onions, topped with red sauce and melted cheese. It was actually officially removed from the menu back in 2013, having first debuted in 1970, but it returned a few years back after customers voted for its revival.

In the last few years, though, the Enchirito has been but a memory – until last week, when it arrived back in stores, with very little fanfare. It just appeared, with no warning, like an ex across a crowded bar that broke your heart and left you high and dry (definitely never happened to me!). Sadly, though, like said ex and the love you once had, it seems as though it’s now a shadow of its former self.

Why?

Well, Taco Bell customers who have tried the returning Enchirito have pointed out that it suffers from a gradual degradation of quality across the restaurant’s ingredients – and it’s particularly noticeable here. Over on Reddit, one person delivered a fairly downbeat review of it, saying that while the flavor feels reminiscent of Enchiritos of the past, the tortilla that Taco Bell now uses for it and the liquidy ground beef inside slightly dull the experience. Another person said, “just ate mine and totally unsatisfied […] Good things never last.”

You’d think that, given how busy Taco Bell has been in the last six months, it wouldn’t feel the need to drop old-school dishes. Last week, it announced its new fajita menu items, and it’s not exactly been short on other stuff going on. But hey, it did it anyway — and this might be one to skip if you’re holding onto the memory of the Enchirito’s glory days.
