To say that Taco Bell likes to play with its menu is an understatement. The restaurant chain is constantly (and I mean constantly) putting out new items and pushing boundaries while it does so. This boundary-pushing nature hasn’t always gone down well with fans: one of the main criticisms people have had of Taco Bell in recent years is that it’s lost sight of its core audience amongst all of these endless new releases. But you can’t accuse it of being lazy.

Even by its own standards, though, Taco Bell has released a fair few menu items in its history that have caused, well…confusion. Bafflement. Double takes. And here are some of its bizarrest dishes.
Biscuit Taco
It wasn’t so much the flavor of the Biscuit Taco that people found strange as the form. When Taco Bell dropped this breakfast item in 2015, it combined a biscuit sandwich and its standard ingredients with a taco format, with the shell-shaped biscuit curling around whatever was inside.
It was definitely eye-catching – and it was also good. Reviewers who tried the Biscuit Taco noted that Taco Bell had nailed the biscuit side of things: It was flaky, buttery, and tender, and while it was a bit more like a bun than a traditional Southern biscuit, it tasted good. It was only ever meant to be a limited-time item, though, and eventually it disappeared, never to be seen again.
Firecracker Burrito
Back in 2017, Taco Bell decided that it wasn’t enough for burritos to be spicy anymore; they had to explode. Quite literally. The Firecracker Burrito was a fairly conventional wrap, but it came with a sachet of Popping Spices, which acted like Pop Rocks. You were meant to sprinkle them on your burrito, and then enjoy(?) the bursting sensation as you ate it.
So far, so weird, right? Apparently, though, nine years later, Taco Bell decided it was time for a remount. The Firecracker Burrito was teased earlier this year as a returning item, although as of October 2026, it hasn’t popped up in stores just yet.
Naked Chicken Chips
Chicken nuggets? Out. Chicken chips? In. That was Taco Bell’s mindset in May 2017, when it brought out its Naked Chicken Chips, a chicken nugget pressed into the shape of a tortilla chip. These were only around for a month, but like its Biscuit Taco, the form caused a lot of discussion. Interestingly enough, though, these are now held up as one of the best chicken items Taco Bell has ever made.
Big Cheez-It Tostada
In 2022, Taco Bell collaborated with Cheez-It on a menu item that felt like it stemmed from a fever dream. The Big Cheez-It Tostada was fairly conventional, aside from the fact that its base was a Cheez-It blown up to 16 times the size of one of its normal crackers. It was both strange and very fragile – the giant Cheez-It was prone to cracking – but flavor-wise it was surprisingly effective. It was popular (or eye-catching) enough for Taco Bell to bring it back in 2024 for another spin.
