Fast food has given fans plenty of wild menu items over the years, but this one might be the coolest yet. KFC has teamed up with one of the biggest anime franchises of all time to create a limited-time menu of purple burgers and other gift items.

The only problem is, this deal is only available in Hong Kong, and it already has fans in other parts of the world asking the same question: “Why can’t we have this?”

What’s the KFC and Evangelions Collaboration All About?

KFC Hong Kong just launched a limited-time menu item to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the iconic anime series that first aired way back in 1995. The show follows teenagers who pilot giant bio-mechanical robots called Evangelions to protect Earth from mysterious enemies known as Angels. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most influential anime franchises ever, inspiring movies, games, toys, clothing and countless brand collaborations.

To celebrate the milestone, KFC embraced the anime’s signature purple and green colours with a campaign called “Purple Awakening.” Everything from the food and packaging to the restaurant decorations takes inspiration from Evangelion Unit-01, the franchise’s most recognizable robot.

A Burger Straight Out Of An Anime

The biggest reason everyone is talking about this collaboration is the Purple Field Zinger Burger. It’s just KFC’s crispy chicken fillet tucked inside a bright purple bun inspired by Evangelion Unit-01. It may not taste dramatically different from a regular Zinger, but it definitely looks like something fans would stop scrolling for.

KFC fans can also get a Purple Sweet Potato Egg Tart and Crispy Purple Sweet Potato Balls.

It’s More Than Just A Burger

KFC didn’t stop with colourful food. Customers who purchase qualifying meals can also collect limited-edition Evangelion character cards (up to 8), while fans can purchase exclusive collaboration merchandise available only during the promotion.

To make the celebration even bigger, one KFC restaurant in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay has been completely transformed with Evangelion decorations, giving visitors an experience that goes far beyond grabbing lunch.

U.S. Fans Are Already Feeling Left Out

As soon as news of the collaboration was announced on KFC Hong Kong’s Instagram account, fans from all over the world including the U.S. were asking for the purple burger to be brought to them.

An Instagram user with the handle @elijahbluefish said, “I’m pissed this isn’t in the U.S.” while also having reservations about the taste of a purple burger. Similarly, a Reddit user also wished the Purple Field Zinger Burger could make its way to “places like San Francisco or Seattle or other metros!”

I think a purple chicken burger tied to one of anime’s most popular franchises would likely attract plenty of curious customers, even among people who have never watched Evangelion. For now, though, the Purple Field Zinger Burger remains a Hong Kong and Macau exclusive.
