There’s a Topo Chico Shortage in the U.S., Here’s Why

Topo Chico is pretty widely considered to be one of the best mineral waters out there, and honestly, there’s a good reason for that. It’s got an ever-so-slightly earthy flavor and a, shall we say, presence about it that stops it from being just another carbonated water, and it’s just delightful with tequila. Topo Chico’s flavored waters are also pretty delish, we must say. And its canned Margaritas are as solid as they come. Did we mention we’re fans?

Apparently, so is everyone else – Topo Chico’s been huge lately, and over the last few years, it’s been flying out of its manufacturing facility at the speed of light. Now, it seems like that facility needs a bit of breathing room. Topo Chico is pretty hard to find at the moment, and here’s why.

Why Is Topo Chico Currently Unavailable Where I Am?

The reason that Topo Chico might be unavailable in your local store is that its source needs a little bit of lovin’. Speaking to KTLA 5, a spokesperson for Coca-Cola (which owns Topo Chico) said that Topo Chico’s unavailability is due to “facility upgrades at the water source and production facilities in Mexico.” A report in CNN, which quoted a letter sent out by Coca-Cola to distributors, provided additional information and stated that the company had “identified additional challenges in the source wells, including quality issues related to the source’s geology.”

The company went on to state that it was investing to improve the stability of the source and to allow Topo Chico to continue being produced in increased quantities. However, that means that they’ve had to slow things down – hence why it’s harder to find. It’s probably no surprise that it needs some infrastructure investment: Topo Chico has been growing significantly in the last few years, and contributed to a big sales jump in water in Coca-Cola’s last quarter.

When Will Topo Chico Supply Be Back to Normal?

According to Coca-Cola, Topo Chico supplies will be disrupted for a while while it works on its improvements, but we can expect to see it stabilize and return to normal later this year. It’s likely that it won’t be back in full until the third quarter, though, so you might have to find a new favorite beverage until then.

This isn’t the first time that Topo Chico has faced disruption in recent memory. A couple of years back, high consumer demand led to a shortage, which was compounded by a shortage of materials used to produce it. In 2025, Topo Chico supply was further shaken when a recall due to potential bacterial contamination was conducted. This water can’t catch a break, and you might have to stick to your San Pellegrino until it’s back in business (hey, there are worse things that could happen).
