The internet is buzzing about Trader Joe’s new Hazelnut & Cocoa Filled Crepes. These handheld, bookmark-shaped sweet treats might just be the cutest items from their latest new product drop. Here’s hoping they taste as good and charming as they look…but if not, that’s okay. I’m never opposed to poorly appropriating French culture. It’s a pastime of mine, really.

Trader Joe’s Hazelnut & Cocoa Filled Crepes

Pros: Trader Joe’s chocolate crepes offend the French just enough for my liking. They’re a delicate little sweet snack with paper-thin layers and a nice cocoa filling that doesn’t go too heavy on the hazelnut. You’re only supposed to microwave these for 6-8 seconds (dare I say, I microwaved them for 7). As my colleague Gwynedd Stuart aptly mentioned, “You could stick one under your armpit for a minute and it would be ready to eat.” She is, per usual, not wrong. Though I do think there’s a world where you quickly brown them on the stove with some butter, and the yumminess factor increases tenfold.

Cons: They do, admittedly, taste kinda old. Which makes sense. Crepes have got to be one of those foods that’s tricky to mass produce. The layers could definitely be more buttery and tender—as it comes, they’re a bit stale. But honestly, if you like a good sweet chocolate filling, it really makes up for the lackluster crepe texture.

Verdict: Crepe purists might want to skip these, because they are a little dry and certainly not Paris café quality, but I think they still make for a great packed lunch snack.
