Rotisserie chicken has always had one small flaw: eventually, someone has to pull it apart. But now, Trader Joe’s has decided that person shouldn’t have to be you.

The grocery chain’s new Seasoned & Shredded Rotisserie Chicken comes fully cooked, fully shredded, lightly seasoned, and ready to become tacos, wraps, salads, pasta, sandwiches, grain bowls, or whatever else you’re convincing yourself you’ll meal prep this week.

It’s basically rotisserie chicken after all the annoying parts have already happened.

This Isn’t What We Asked For

For years, Trader Joe’s shoppers asked the company to sell whole rotisserie chickens. Instead, Trader Joe’s skipped the bird entirely and went straight to the leftovers. And you know what? That’s kind of genius. Not because shredding chicken is difficult. It’s not exactly a complex culinary skill. It’s because it’s the type of task nobody enjoys enough to actually miss.

The internet, however, is divided.

Some shoppers love the idea of having a ready-to-go protein that can disappear into almost any meal. Others have looked at the $8.99 price tag and wondered why they wouldn’t just buy a whole rotisserie chicken somewhere else and do the five minutes of work themselves.

Some Reddit commenters were even more skeptical, questioning the packaging, the value, and whether Trader Joe’s had solved a problem that actually existed. Which raises the real question: What exactly are we paying for? Because it isn’t really the chicken. It’s the time.

Convenience Or Price?

That’s what Trader Joe’s has removed from the equation. Someone else cooked it. Someone else shredded it. Someone else packed it into a container so you can throw it into dinner without standing over a cutting board pulling apart a chicken carcass. And increasingly, that’s what grocery stores are selling. Not just food. Time.

It’s the same reason people buy pre-cut fruit, chopped vegetables, or salad kits where someone else has already done the washing, slicing, and mixing. None of these things are impossible to do yourself. They just remove one more tedious task from your day. And it seems like plenty of people are willing to pay for that.

The funny part is that Trader Joe’s spent years not selling rotisserie chicken―only to launch what is essentially tomorrow’s leftovers instead. It’s a very Trader Joe’s solution to a very Trader Joe’s problem. And I respect it.
