Who doesn’t love a no-bake dessert? Especially a double-layer sponge cake covered in whipped cream and gooey strawbs??? The photo on the box is a lot to live up to for something you simply defrost in the fridge, but I was optimistic about the new Trader Joe’s Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake. I really liked their Strawberries & Creme Pancake & Waffle Mix, so maybe the flavor profile is a sweet spot for everyone’s favorite purveyor of proprietary groceries.
The description on the box promises two layers of sponge cake with a custard filling, whipped cream, and strawberries. Yum. But will a cake that’s light as a cloud just taste like … air? We tried this new Trader Joe’s dessert to find out.
Pros: Trader Joe’s has made a well-executed cloud cake. It’s easy to dig into slice after slice because it really is light—the cake and the cream. The smooth taste of luxurious whipped cream really complements the bright, bold taste of the saucy strawberry slices.
Cons: I know our job here at Sporked is to tell you what tastes good rather than to dwell on fat and cals, but this cake is surprisingly caloric for something that’s a bit like sweet, glorified air. You really need to eat three slices for it to make an impression, and that’ll set you back nearly 500 calories. One serving (aka one slice, aka a sixth of the cake) is simply NOT going to satisfy most people. We love the simplicity of the flavors and the preparation, but when it comes to must-buy Trader Joe’s desserts, I’ll be stocking up on TJ’s S’more’s Bars before the disappear for the year.

Our verdict on Trader Joe’s Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake?
It’s a lovely confection you don’t have to fuss over, but if you want something filling and flavorful, there are better Trader Joe’s desserts to buy.
