Well, technically, I tried two of Jeni’s new ice cream flavors but obviously I had to get you in here with some sort of buzzworthy hook. And there’s no better hook than acorn ice cream, I’ll tell you that much. One that reportedly took five years to develop. I have a lot of respect for food scientists, so I’m happy to give them my business to check out their hard work. How’d they do? Let’s run through it.

Jeni’s Appalachian Acorn Pie Ice Cream

Pros: This really is the perfect ice cream. Well, shortly behind cookies and cream, obviously. It’s built on a heck of a gimmick and it’s backed up with a delightful flavor. In the ice cream, you’ll find nutty, sweet acorn flour throughout with streaks of graham cracker thrown in. It’s a soft but familiar flavor that feels very salted caramely.

Cons: This isn’t on Jeni’s at all, but the flavor was so familiar and I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Can you tell that I have no actual cons? Yeah, it’s pretty obvious when I start talking about random B.S. in this section. Hurry out and try this one out for yourself and let me know if you can place the flavor!

Jeni’s Sweet Potato Marshmallow Brûlée

Pros: A sneaky fall flavor that Jeni’s tried to hide from us! This one wasn’t around during our last fall flavor review but thankfully, I was able to snag a half scoop of it while I was checking out the acorn pie ice cream.

It should come as no surprise, considering you can actually see the orange of the sweet potato in the scoop, but this really nails the flavor. There’s a warm, spiced sweet potato base with swirls of marshmallow sweet cream. That’s amplified by bursts of cracked sugar candy mixed in that deliver an extra dose of sweetness in each bite. It makes for a wholly prominent flavor that really is reminiscent of the dish it’s based on.

Cons: This one really loses a few points because of its very nature. Ultimately you’re putting together sweet potatoes with sweet marshmallow cream and adding in chunks of sweetness. It’s just a little too sweet to really have more than a half scoop of the flavor. Here’s a free tip as well. Eat this one first before it can start to melt and overpower the accompanying flavor.
