We Tried Skittles’ New Crystal Gummies (And They Rival Nerds)

A couple of years ago Nerds did something in the candy space that really put them in a league of their own. Their combination of gummies and hard (but not too hard) candy in the form of Nerds Gummy Clusters was not only delicious, but it was kind of unmatched in the industry. There was no candy on the market that resembled it, and it was distinctly different from the Nerds we grew up with.

Ever since being introduced to Nerds Gummy Clusters, though, we’ve been waiting to see who would step up to bat to try and match their success. Today, dear reader, we have our first contender. Skittles has just released their Gummy Crystals made with a squishy gummy and a tangy, crunchy exterior. While they look nothing like Nerds Gummy Clusters, the theory around them is basically the same. The flavored colorful gummy is coated in little particles of crunchy candy, all with a nice acidic pop. The Skittles Gummy Crystals have a clear crystalline sugar appearance allowing the color of the gummy shines through. 

The theory of the launch sounds great, but how will it hold up to the ultimate taste test? Luckily for us, Skittles sent over a bag of their Skittles Gummy Crystals in the Original and Tropical Splash flavors for us to get an early taster of, and we’re here to let you all in on the inside scoop. Here’s our official Sporked review.

Our Official Thoughts

We’re happy to report that these are one of the better candies that we’ve tried in the past couple years. If you are anything like us and love the flavor of the original Skittles, then it’s safe to say you won’t be disappointed with these. In each one of the Gummy Crystals, you taste the that classic Skittles flavor in both varieties. Whether Tropical Splash is your thing in the original Skittles format, or the tried and true Original flavors are more of a cup of tea, you will get that punch of flavor satisfaction with the Gummy Crystals.

Plus, Skittles kind of already have the chewy center with a candy coating exterior combination going for them. This kind of just exacerbates those qualities and turns the chewy center into a full gummy and the crunchy candy coating on the outside into large, crystalline, tangy sugar bits.

In their own right, these have an excellent gummy texture that isn’t too firm, but isn’t too chewy either. The gummy doesn’t get stuck in your teeth and the crunchy sugar bits don’t feel like you’re going to crack a tooth on them either. Additionally, these are very well balance between the acidic flavors and the sweet in a way that keeps drawing you into the next one. Before you know it, the bag will be empty.
