I’ve already gotten deep in the weeds on the differences between heavy cream and whipping cream. And honestly, I thought that would be the end of the milk talk. But then EIC Justine came at me with this whole half and half business and I slammed my head against the wall. More milk stuff?! Can’t we just call all of it milk and move on with our lives?! What the hell is this half and half stuff anyway, pick a side and stick to it!
What is half and half?
Half and half of what? Milk and milk? Essentially, yes. What kind of bill of goods are they trying to sell us here?! I’m on to you, Big Milk.
It’s 50% whole milk, 50% heavy cream. That’s the stuff they skim off the top of milk that is chock full of fat. You know, the good stuff. But instead of people just committing to milk or heavy cream in their coffee, they thought “I just want to be a little bit naughty.”
Is half and half the same as heavy cream?
No, they are not the same thing. At least heavy cream picks a side. Heavy cream is the thick stuff with at least 36% fat content. Half and half is that weak, indecisive friend who can’t commit to any plans because they think something else more interesting might come up.
Is whipping cream the same as half and half?
Heavy cream is basically the same thing as whipping cream, so that means half and half is also not that. They just come up with all these different names to frighten and confuse us!
Does half and half have sugar?
Yes! But it’s naturally occurring sugar and it’s not a lot. Usually, companies don’t add extra sugar. But they should, because milk is generally gross and we shouldn’t be drinking it anymore. Free the massive cows! Let them roam the streets!
