Here’s What Actually Goes into Twisted Tea

For such a widespread, ancient, and popular beverage, tea is surprisingly divisive. Those who love it absolutely swear by it, touting tea’s wide variety of flavors as well as its health and wellness benefits. Some people, like a friend of mine from college, say tea tastes like “wet leaves.” But if you’re a tea lover, you may also enjoy the alcoholic version of the classic beverage, Twisted Tea. If you’re not, you may find it to taste like wet leaves with an alcoholic aftertaste. But whatever your preference, you may not know exactly what the deal is with Twisted Tea.

What’s in Twisted Tea? Is Twisted Tea beer? How many times can you read the words “Twisted Tea” before they start to lose meaning? Twisted Tea…Twisted Tea…Twisted Tea. Today is the time to teach you the truth about this tantalizingly tasty tonic.

What alcohol is in Twisted Tea?

As with hard seltzer, hard tea is a bit of a challenge to define. However, it’s closer to beer than it is to hard liquor (even though it’s not carbonated). Essentially, Twisted Tea is a malt beverage. So, it isn’t spiked with anything like vodka or even grain alcohol. Instead, it is made with a base alcohol that is brewed (like beer), along with real black tea, citrus flavors, and sweeteners.

How much alcohol is in Twisted Tea?

Twisted Tea contains about the same amount of alcohol as a typical beer—about 5% ABV.

Does Twisted Tea have caffeine?

According to the Twisted Tea website, “Twisted Tea has some caffeine, but much less than a cup of coffee. We use real tea leaves, so you gotta expect some of the real effects! For reference, a 12 oz. serving of Twisted Tea has about 30mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee has around 100mg.”

And is Twisted Tea gluten free?

Alas, according to their website, the answer is no. “Twisted Tea products do not contain ingredients or ingredients derived from milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts or soy. All Twisted Tea styles do contain gluten, however, given we’re brewed in a process similar to beer.”

Can you buy a bunch of merchandise to show off your Twisted Tea bona fides?

The answer to this question, of course, is yes. The Twisted Tea online store has a truly impressive collection of weird Tea-related merchandise, from pint glasses and beer koozies to swim suits and LED lights. What better way to show your love for wet leaves?
