I remember when my older brother used to come back from GNC and store these giant protein powders in our kitchen cabinets. The first time I saw them, I wondered if my family was becoming one of those prepper families, and if our post-apocalyptic future would only involve flavors “chocolate” and “vanilla” (plus whatever creatinine is).

All credit to my older bro for quite literally powering through that Spartan selection of protein powders. Because nowadays, you can get your protein fix with anything from Yoo-Hoo to Greek yogurt. We even give our functional nutrition the “fall makeover” usually reserved for coffee and donuts and decorative wreaths. For instance: Little Debbie Pumpkin Spice Roll RYSE Protein Shakes.

Little Debbie Cares About Gains, Too

Granted the name and general branding of “Little Debbie” don’t immediately conjure images of contoured muscles and stair masters. It’s unclear from the product image whether Little Debbie herself actually hits the gym―where would she put that hat?―but the brand itself isn’t new to the shelves of GNC.

The main collaboration is with nutritional supplement brand RYSE, which delivers its formulated nutrition in anything from drinks and powders to pre- and post-workout candy drops. RYSE, by the way, is no stranger to collaboration―they’ve brought everybody from JIF and Country Time Lemonade to Jet-Puffed Marshmallows to the fitness world. Nor is this Little Debbie’s first go around with RYSE. Prior to the protein shake, they’d already partnered with RYSE in protein powders based on those sprinkle-studded Cosmic Brownies, the (delightful but undersung) Strawberry Shortcake Rolls, and, yes, even the Pumpkin Spice Rolls.

Pumpkin Spice And Everything Nice (But Mostly Protein)

We haven’t tried the new Pumpkin Spice Rolls protein shake, but based on their prior collaboration, we’d have to assume the flavor plays out similar to the protein powder. (And, if you’ve previously purchased the protein powder, this might just be an easier way to get your pumpkin spice on while also ingesting 30 grams of protein.)

RYSE also offers Fudgsicle and Vanilla Marshmallow-flavored shakes, but considering the fallness of it all, we are kind of craving a bit of spice. The Pumpkin Spice Rolls shake follows the same formula as RYSE’s classics―filtered water, plus their proprietary protein blend. Each bottle has 160 calories per bottle, with 2.5 grams of fat, 50% of your daily calcium, and only 4 carbs per bottle (they add sweetness with sucralose, aka Splenda). And of course, there’s that aforementioned 30 grams of protein which is a ton of protein per serving, so if you do find yourself loving the flavor, maybe take a break from the RYSE and grab a PSL instead. (There’s always tomorrow for more gains.)

She's unapologetically against macaroni salad and believes Sour Patch Kids are an acceptable substitute for cherry tomatoes in a salad.
