The best sweet potato fries in the frozen section cook up sweet and savory and perfect for those days when you want to eat fried foods but you want them to be orange so you know they’re “healthy.” We love foods that allow us to pretend we’re doing something good for our bodies—sweet potato fries are in that category.

One note about making the best frozen sweet potato fries at home: Make sure they’re air fryer sweet potato fries. All the sweet potato fries on this list—from sweet potato waffle fries to thin, crispy sweet potato fries—still taste great when you cook them in the oven, but they crisp up so much better in the air fryer. Just a little tip from people who made many, many batches of sweet potato fries for three separate taste tests.

What we looked for in the best sweet potato fries:

  • Actual flavor: We taste tested so many frozen sweet potato fries that taste like absolutely nothing…it’s criminal! The best sweet potato fries should have a naturally sweet, savory, roasted flavor that doesn’t skimp on the salt or seasoning.
  • Good texture: We aren’t asking for a miracle—we know sweet potato fries are rarely as crunchy as standard french fries. Our goal was to find tender fries that aren’t too starchy and have decent crispiness out of the air fryer.
  • Natural sweetness: When sweet potato fries are too sugary or maple-y, it’s a hard sell for us. We want balance. This is a savory-sweet food, not a dessert.

From seasoned sweet potato fries to crinkle cuts, these are the best sweet potato fries you can find at the grocery store.

Best Seasoned

Checkers Rally’s Sweet Potatoes Seasoned Fries

No one liked these frozen sweet potato fries quite as much as I did, but you should still believe me: They’re good. What other tasters didn’t love that I did is that these are soooo thin. Shoestring thin. And I think that’s fun and unique for sweet potato fries. Yes, they were a little limp (I cooked them in the oven), but they will crisp up great in the air fryer. And, of course, they have that peppery coating that Rally’s/Checkers regular fries have, and it really complements the sweetness of the fries themselves. We tried some other brands of seasoned sweet potato fries that just really didn’t work. If you like Checkers fries and you like sweet potato fries, you’ll like these. —Gwynedd Stuart

Signature Select Classic Sweet Potato Julienne Fries

These are the best sweet potato fries if you want real, genuine sweet potato flavor. When editor-in-chief Justine Sterling ate one of these, she said, “Yup, tastes like you’re eating a vegetable.” That’s a good thing! Other frozen sweet potato fries we tasted were suspiciously sweet (like, they taste almost maple-y) and others were really, really bland. These have such a nice, balanced flavor that really captures the glory of the sweet potato. —Gwynedd Stuart

Best Savory Flavor

Actual Veggies Purple Sweet Potato Fries

Don’t be alarmed. I say that because out of the packaging, these thick purple sweet potato fries have an alarming appearance. Hell, even after you’ve baked them, they still look like dismembered monster fingers. But they taste incredible. They’re coated in pea protein to give them an actual crunch (again, that sounds unappetizing, but it’s really yummy!) and mixed with chickpeas for a more tender and less starchy texture. A marvel of modern cuisine, if you ask me. Plus, since purple sweet potatoes lean more savory than sweet, these are great for the savory gals like me. —Ariana Losch

Best Crunch

Actual Veggies Sweet Potato Fries

Take everything we already loved about Actual Veggie’s Purple Sweet Potato Fries and apply it here, just with a slightly less insane appearance and a touch more sweetness from regular sweet potatoes and incorporated carrot. These have actual crunch to them, you guys. It’s insane. You just can’t judge a book by its cover, because they really do look pretty freaky. (And by freaky, I mean turd-y. Sorry, but it’s the truth.) —Ariana Losch

Ore-Ida Crinkle Cut Sweet Potato Fries

We tried a few brands of crinkle cut sweet potato fries, but these are the best frozen sweet potato fries by far if you’re into crinkles like I am. They’re sweet without being too sweet and have a bit of a coating that gives them some crunch so they aren’t floppy and weird. The Ore-Ida crinkles perfectly balance sweet and savory. Alexia Seasoned Sweet Potato Waffle Fries

Alexa sweet potato waffle fries are unreal. After our second taste test of the best frozen sweet potato fries, I was super tempted to put these in the number one spot, but I know not everyone likes waffle fries, for a variety of reasons, but mostly because they can be too fat and potatoey to really crisp up. These air fryer sweet potato fries (yeah, I cooked this batch in the air fryer) are not as fat as other waffle fries so they crisp up. I definitely cooked these slightly longer than they were supposed to be cooked, but it was a good strategy. The savory seasoning is absolutely addictive in concert with the sweetness of the potatoes. Such a great combo! If you love to dip your sweet potato fries and want something with a lot of surface area, these are the best sweet potato fries to buy. —Gwynedd Stuart

Sprouts Straight Cut Sweet Potato Fries

Sprouts Straight Cut sweet potato fries are the best sweet potato fries on this list if you like ‘em crispy-crunchy. These air fryer sweet potato fries are some of the only sweet potato fries I’ve ever had that actually crisp up! They’re very thin, much like shoestring fries. Why aren’t more sweet potato fries like shoestring fries? The less meat, the more crispness you get, especially since Sprouts uses a potato starch coating. If you want big, meaty sweet potato fries, these may not be your jam, but if you want sweet potato fries that don’t flop when you pick ‘em up, these are pretty much unrivaled. —Gwynedd Stuart

Roots Organic Sweet Potato Fries

When you look at the imagery on a bag of Roots Organic Sweet Potato Fries you’re immediately like, yes, those are going to be the best frozen sweet potato fries—duh. They look homemade—they even have some skin! The bad news is that when you finally open the bag, these frozen sweet potato fries look nothing like the picture on the package (no skin!). The good news is that they’re still really, really good. In fact, they’re the best sweet potato fries we could find. They’re very flavorful and fresh tasting, just like sweet potato fries from a restaurant. They were good in the oven, but they’ll be great in the air fryer. I’ll say it one more time and then I’ll shut up: Frozen sweet potato fries should always be air fryer sweet potato fries! —Gwynedd Stuart
