The core principle of fast food is, of course, to appeal to as many people as possible, but in their relentless drive to get people talking (and to visit their restaurants), chains like Taco Bell and Burger King will stop at nothing to bring out wild, weird, gimmicky items that make a splash.
Back in 2023, BK did that once again, when it brought out a chocolate burger—yes, a chocolate burger—over in Thailand. Given how much of a splash it made back then, and how much people have talked about it since, we frankly wouldn’t be surprised if it made a pit stop in the U.S. any time soon. Just make sure you book that dentist appointment before you eat one.
The Chocolate King Combined Beef, Cheese, and Chocolate
We’re sure that Burger King’s Chocolate King burger was a work of art to some people. To the majority of folks, however, it probably seemed like a monstrosity. This utterly bizarre sandwich placed a BK patty, a slice of cheese, bacon, and crispy fried onions together. So far, so good—until it topped all of those ingredients with Hershey’s chocolate sauce. Um, what?
To make matters even stranger, the Chocolate King served all of this up on a chocolate-flavored bun. While this sounds like something that your kids might have dreamt up in the kitchen, the concept of chocolate and meat going together isn’t totally out there, and the deep, mature sweetness of some chocolate can bring out the umami notes in proteins like beef. Plus, people who sampled this burger back when it was out reported that it wasn’t actually that bad, with one person commenting on Instagram account @snackolator’s post about the burger saying, “I’ve actually tried it the last time I was in Bangkok… pretty good!” We’ll leave it up to you as to whether you believe them or not.
This Chocolate Burger Is Far from the Only Strange Item Burger King Has Released
As of yet, there’s no word on whether this burger will reach the U.S., which might be very good news to people who like their sandwiches, y’know, normal. It’s not like Burger King doesn’t have form in releasing wacky burgers Stateside, though. In the past, the fast food chain has experimented with Whoppers with black buns, burgers that are filled with Brussels sprout purée, its famous Chicken Fries, and Pizza Cheeseburgers. Oh, and it’s currently testing a Bacon Cheddar Hash Whopper, full of beef, bacon, cheese sauce, egg, hash browns, and Hollandaise sauce. It’s safe to say they’re not afraid to take risks.
The Chocolate King is also just one of several odd burgers that BK has released in Thailand. The Southeast Asian nation has also previously seen the chain’s Real Cheeseburger, also released briefly in 2023, a sandwich which had… wait for it… 20 slices of cheese. Clearly, nothing’s off-limits for the restaurant.
