Costco Sells a Sourdough Bread Kit Now—But Is It Worth the Cost?

Costco, the otherwise cutting-edge company, is finally ready to capitalize on the sourdough trend that took place *checks notes* six years ago? Hey, better late than never! It takes time to get a product through from creation, production, and onto shelves across the country. Especially so considering Costco’s new sourdough kit comes as a collab with a notable brand in the bakeware space. A deal that surely took quite some time to finalize. So, what’s this kit all about?

Officially named “the Nordic Ware Simply Sourdough Starter Kit,” this set purports to have all you need to become a sourdough baking powerhouse

Nordic Ware is a staple in the baking community. Founded in Minnesota (couldn’t pass up a shoutout to my homeland), the kitchen and bakeware brand is highly regarded for its quality products. All that’s to say, you know the items in this kit are going to be the best of the best.

The tools that come in the kit include an aluminized steel bread baking pan with aluminum lid, a silicone baking sling, a scoring tool, a Danish dough whisk with a hardwood handle, a bench scraper, a glass jar for starter culture, and a 24-page step-by-step instruction booklet. It’s meant to be everything you need to actually cultivate a starter, make a dough, shape the dough into a loaf, score the loaf, and bake it all into bread.

While the kit itself doesn’t include the actual starter, the booklet walks you through the steps to create your own. The only other thing you’ll need is the flour to make the loaves, which, coincidentally, Costco also sells.

Okay, but you still haven’t told us—is it worth the price?

In one word? Absolutely. This kit is $79.99 on Costco’s website. The pan alone is sold on Amazon for $60. Then you have all the extra bits and bobs that come with the kit. Surely they’re worth more than the $20 difference in price points. Actually, the same kit is listed on Amazon for $100. You’re already saving $20 just by shopping at Costco! Think of all the hot dog combos you could get with that extra savings (13 actually, I did the math for you).
