I love a sushi burrito. I’m not going to lie about that fact. Yes, they can sometimes feel a bit gaudy and overblown, but in their best forms, they combine the plumpness of a burrito, the fresh zip of sushi, and a sense of fun that I really get on board with – while also (hopefully) not costing the earth for all of that. That’s only if they’re good, though, and when they miss the mark, boy does it show.

That’s why I’m a liiiiittle concerned about Costco’s new sushi burrito, a new prepared item that’s recently hit its shelves and has made some waves – not all of them universally positive. What’s the lowdown on this new dish? Well, we’re about to tell ya.

What Is Costco’s New Sushi Burrito?

This new Costco item can be found nestled in its sushi section, and it’s a must for anyone who ever wished their sushi pieces were just a little bit, well, burrito-shaped. The sushi burrito has a snow crab and sriracha salmon poke filling, with avocado and cucumber, all wrapped in sushi rice and nori. You also get a side of Japanese-style BBQ sauce, and two inari pockets with sushi rice inside, for a touch of crunch.

Okay, And What’s The Response Been?

Well, we think it’s fair to say that it’s been mixed, guys. Some people have really got on board with this sushi burrito, noting that the crab was a real highlight and that the vegetables inside retained their freshness (not bad when they’re encased in a mound of sushi rice). Importantly, it’s also not tough, which is one of the biggest annoyances with premade sushi, with the rice turning chalky and, to be honest, kinda gross.

However, there’s one big problem with this new item, which is its price. Costco’s new sushi burrito is a whopping $16.99 per pound, and most of its individual packs are coming in at about $20 to $25. For some customers, this just isn’t worth it, especially because Costco’s other prepared items, like its hot dog (which recently got a bourbon of its own – yes, really), are famously affordable.

And Is The Price The Only Issue?

Well, the price wouldn’t be such an issue if this were the best sushi burrito that had ever been produced. The problem, though, is that some folks have pointed out that its quality just isn’t up to scratch. “Not a fan of the flavor. The sauce is great,” said one Redditor who tried the burrito (which is, let’s be honest, just a big sushi roll). “Just such bad quality for 20 bucks.” The inari pockets are also a bit of a letdown, with some noting that they have too much rice in them and lack balance.

That said, Costco does have some of the best grocery store sushi out there (well, by our estimations, anyway), and as this is a new item, it may well get better over time. Until then, we’ll be over here dreaming of Japanese Costco’s sushi selection and looking up how much flights cost.
