The Best Frozen Burritos We’ve Ever Eaten

Ideally, the best frozen burritos are good enough to rival what you’d get at your favorite local Mexican restaurant. Is that actually the case? Well, not quite. But hey—they’re good enough to rival what you’d get at a gas station! Still, in our many frozen burrito taste tests we’ve found what we can say (with authority) are some of the best frozen burritos at the grocery store. In separate taste tests, we’ve found the best breakfast burritos, the best beef burritos, and the best bean burritos; currently, we’re in the process of updating our best chicken burritos ranking, so stay tuned for that.

Here’s what we’ve learned: The best microwave burritos are wrapped in tasty, tender tortillas. They shouldn’t turn to stone after they’ve been nuked for 60 seconds. They have flavorful fillings that aren’t too oily or too pulverized. We don’t have anything against a good good tube, but if you’re gonna be a tube of goop, that goop better taste really good

Whether you’re a culinarily challenged bachelor/bachelorette looking for your next quick dinner or a culinarily proficient bachelor/bachelorette who simply likes a sloppy bean burrito every now and then, there’s a frozen burrito on this list for you.

Best Frozen Breakfast Burrito

Tina’s Breakfast Burrito, Handcrafted, Egg, Sausage & Cheddar Cheese

This is like a cheesier version of the McDonald’s sausage breakfast burrito that you know and love, and it’s remained our favorite frozen breakfast burrito in multiple taste tests. The sausage is peppery and a little smoky. The filling is super cheesy and soft, even if the tortilla can tend to harden on the ends. It’s also the perfect size: not too big and not too small, although if you’re pretty hungry, g’head and heat up two. This is the best frozen burrito to enjoy in the morning without ruining the rest of your day. —Jordan Myrick

Best Frozen Bean Burrito

Ramona’s Bean & Cheese Burrito

This bean and cheese burrito is so gooey and cheesy and filling. So many frozen bean burritos are filled with hard, mealy pinto beans; the creamy refritos in this burrito are a revelation. Why are they so creamy? Well, if you take a peek at the ingredients, you’ll find there’s lard in the mix. So, yeah, this frozen burrito isn’t vegetarian, but it was too good not to take the top spot. It’s the best frozen burrito for bean lovers. —Jordan Myrick

Best Frozen Beef Burrito

Ramona’s Beef & Bean Burrito

Our first attempt to find the best frozen burrito with a beef filling was kind of a fail—everything we tried was oily, mushy, and bad, so a totally plant based beef burrito ended up taking the top spot. Personally, I’ll take plant-based protein over actual meat any ol’ day, but I also understand that some people want actual beef when they’re in the mood for beef. That’s why we were so thrilled when, in a more recent taste test, we found a genuinely delicious beef burrito. This is a goop tube, but a good one. The beef is shredded and lean (rather than ground and oily) and the refried beans are super creamy. There’s a gentle, simmering heat in there, too, so you can skip the hot sauce if you’re eating this on the go. —Gwynedd Stuart

Best Frozen Steak Burrito

Trader Joe’s Carne Asada Burrito

You know how they make “Oops! All Berries” Cap’n Crunch? This frozen burrito is like the steak version of that. There’s really not much going on in this thing besides steak, steak, and more steak, but it’s really good all the same. Through and through it tastes like meat that was gently grilled over charcoal. It’s rich and fatty without being greasy, but it would definitely benefit from some fresh ingredients on top—I’d go with a tangy salsa verde, a dollop of crema, and a sprinkle of queso fresco. —Gwynedd Stuart
