Last week, I was befuddled by a piece of beverage news that came out of nowhere. According to one food and beverage influencer, the fan-favorite summertime flavor Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut would be sticking around permanently beyond the end of July. As Sporked‘s preeminent beverage journalist, I had to put on my detective cap and get to the bottom of the situation. Let’s dig into what’s really going on with Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut.

Is Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut back on shelves permanently?

No. I have checked with multiple sources across every aspect of Keurig Dr Pepper to try and figure out where this rumor originated, and no one could point to anything that could even be misunderstood to suggest Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut would stick around beyond July. No plans have changed internally or externally regarding this particular release. If you love this Dr Pepper variant, you still need to stock up before the end of July to last you through next summer, if not forever.

Where did this rumor come from?

The influencer in question allegedly got the Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut news from someone who works for Keurig Dr Pepper at their booth during the National Restaurant Association Expo. I intentionally held off on spreading this Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut rumor when it first hit the web because the pieces just didn’t line up. This particular industry event is entirely focused on foodservice; there were few, if any, representatives qualified to speak on the retail side of Keurig Dr Pepper‘s business. Moreso, I was just at the industry event in question and heard nothing along these lines from anyone I spoke with.

This is the part of this article that’s going to sound a little bragadocious. Without saying too much, I actually stopped by the Keurig Dr Pepper booth at the National Restaurant Association Expo to catch up with a few esteemed friends inside the company. If the representatives of KDP at this event were allowed to reveal anything juicy about the retail side of the business, I believe I would have heard it in our conversations (which were juicy enough as it is).

Why did this rumor get spread like a fact?

Look, I’m no angel here; I deal in rumors more often than the average bear. A healthy amount of the news I cover on Sporked and on social media alike comes from a web of internal sources that I have to check against one another in the spirit of journalistic due diligence. In an endless internet of AI “what if?” slop, the last thing I want to do is damage my hard-earned credibility by sharing something that turns out to be false.

Unfortunately, social media news pages aren’t held to the same standards as good old traditional media. Corrections and retractions are a luxury when there’s relatively little to lose by staying quiet about errors. I’ve been lucky enough to befriend others in the social media news space who share my dedication to accuracy, but that doesn’t mean you should expect every page to maintain the same level of fact-checking and source verification you’d get from a reputable news outlet. (I didn’t mean for this to turn into a public service announcement about not believing everything you see on the internet, but it sure turned out that way.)
