Burger King Just Brought Back a Fan-Favorite Food Item After 15 Years

Every fast food menu item, no matter how briefly it was sold, sticks in someone’s brain as the best they’ve ever had. The Baja Blast Pie comes around once in a lifetime, the Thin Mint Frosty comes around every cookie season, and the McRib comes around as often as McDonald’s can afford pork. Basically, you’re lucky if your favorite limited-edition item comes back yearly. This week, Burger King is bringing back one of my favorite menu items after fifteen long years in the void of discontinuation.

Which classic menu item is back at Burger King?

Burger King‘s iconic crown-shaped nuggets are returning to the menu for a limited time. First launched in 2006, these crowns were a fun, thematic alternative to the boot, ball, bow tie, and bell offered across the street.

This return comes alongside a Crayola-themed King Jr. Meal. Instead of a plastic tchotchke, each Crayola King Jr. Meal comes with a four-pack of crayons, a coloring-book-style crown, and an equally-colorable meal bag. As someone who wasn’t particularly impressed with the Mandalorian and Grogu toys offered in the previous King Jr. Meal, this ultra-interactive meal seems like a step in the right direction. (Back in my day, some kind of light-up/noisy/karate-chipping action in your kids’ meal accessory was a human right. Those Star Wars toys were just little statues!)

Funny story, I was the first member of the media to know these nuggets were returning–by total accident. Back in April, I visited Burger King Headquarters in Miami for an early taste test of the Star Wars Bounty Bundle. Entirely joking, I asked Burger King’s CMO Joel Yashinsky what I’d have to do for BK to bring back the crown-shaped nuggets… at which point he turned to someone else in the room and asked exactly how embargoed I was. One nod later, I was let in on the secret of this summer’s long-awaited return of these nostalgic royal nuggets.

When can I get my hands on the long-lost Crown Nuggets?

Crown Nuggets are available in both King Kr. Meals and a standalone 8-piece order starting June 2nd, while supplies last. The Crayola-themed King Jr. Meal launches June 9th.
