McDonald’s has long been the go-to for a cheap meal that you can get on the go. With $1 McDoubles and McChickens available on their value menu, why would you go anywhere else when you’re tight on cash. McDonald’s has billed itself as the affordable stop-in that can keep your belly full and that reputation can’t be forgotten overnight. That’s why the recent revamp of the McValue menu has been such an outrage for McDonald’s customers.

What Changed?

The McValue menu’s recent revamp follows the brand’s announcement of the menu earlier last year. The menu previously featured the ability to do a “buy one, add one” feature where you could buy one full-priced item and add another item as a side for just $1. This not only provided the flexibility of utilizing the menu to build your perfect combo, but it came at a time when food prices began to soar. Now, everything on the new McValue menu is simply guaranteed to be under $3.

Why Customers Are So Upset

To many, they feel as though McDonalds has betrayed the ethos it has come to embody. Being known as the spot for a good deal is critical to their brand loyalty. Even though $3 isn’t that expensive compared to most other restaurants and fast-food chains, customers believed that McDonald’s was the one they could rely on. Reddit users say that McDonald’s has forgotten about who their customers are. “If McDonald’s offered cheap food at good prices, they’d win back a lot of their customers,” said one user.

An Impossible Expectation

A report from the USDA even said that as of April 2026 food prices had increased by over 3% since the previous year. McDonald’s has increased in proportion to the national inflation rate. Yet, customers are still not satisfied. The jump from $1 items to $3 items on the value menu was too noticeable and it outraged consumers. But I believe consumers aren’t appropriately contextualizing their frustrations. As a consumer, you can’t expect that McDonald’s will be able to keep prices that low when the price of ingredients goes up for them as well. And, if you are no longer satisfied with the prices that McDonald’s can offer, then you simply don’t have to eat there anymore. There is a cost to the convenience that McDonald’s offers, and they’re still making a conscious effort to maintain certain items at low prices despite recent inflation in food cost.
