While many of us have a degree of flexibility when it comes to our fast food preferences, others don’t. I’ll personally go for either McDonald’s or Burger King when either one is in front of me (and in the absence of other choices), but for some, the brand loyalty to one or the other is real – and McDonald’s still takes the lead in a lot of eyes, CEO eating dramas aside.

Now, though, some customers are finally jumping ship on McDonald’s and heading to Burger King as their go-to. Why? Because it’s getting too damn expensive. Let’s discuss.
Sorry, McDonald’s, You’re Just Not As Affordable As You Think
Over the last couple of days, there’s been a notable amount of disquiet coming out of the McDonald’s customer camp, and most of it is to do with its pricing. Last month, the restaurant chain revealed its McValue menu, which promised, well, (Mc)value, but people are finding that it really isn’t as good a deal as it makes out to be – and really, what the menu does is highlight the fact that prices have gotten out of control.
At the moment, McDonald’s is offering the McDouble on its value menu for $2.50, but on Reddit, people have pointed out that this same burger was less than half the price a decade back. “This is not just inflation, this is greed,” one person said. They’ve also clocked the fact that the much-publicized $3 menu in the McValue offer is full of items that were already under $3. So is it really that good of a deal if they’re just repackaging items under a new bannerhead? Not really.
Is Burger King…Better?
Because of all this, customers are now checking back in with Burger King, and finding that it might, just might, be a better choice. One customer (again over on Reddit) talked about the “price gouging” at McDonald’s, and said that it ultimately led them to order their breakfast sandwich from Burger King instead. “The quality was noticeably better. I was shocked at how real the bacon was at Burger King compared to McDonald’s,” they said. “You can tell Burger King’s bacon is thicker and actually grilled. It was $2 cheaper than McDonald’s and I gotta say it was much better.” Others in the thread stated that they’ve also noticed that Burger King now feels better value than the Golden Arches.
It should be said that’s not a universal opinion. “Perhaps Burger King in your area is cheap or cheaper, but not mine,” said another person. “Most of these fast food places are all raising their prices far more and far faster than the rate of inflation.” As such, maybe the real winning move is to avoid both of them (plenty of good frozen breakfast sandwiches out there, guys).
