Chris Kempczinski just can’t catch a break, can he? The McDonald’s CEO has been the talk of the internet for the last few months, in a way that we can only describe as “relentlessly.” After the Mickey D’s head tried the new Big Arch burger in a video, and it promptly went viral, with countless people criticizing the size of the bite he took, the news just rolled on and on.

Kempczinski recently sat down with the Wall Street Journal to address the infamous video – and during the interview, he not only seemed to blame his Mom for his tendency to take small bites while he’s speaking, but he also took another bite on camera, this time of a chicken nugget. As you might expect, people moved to the comment section at the speed of light. Here’s how it shook out.
Bitegate: The Scandal That Never Ceases
In his WSJ conversation with Tim Higgins, Kempczinski took the journalist into the McDonald’s tasting kitchen, where they both discussed the detail that goes into McDonald’s food over servings of chicken nuggets and fries. When Higgins asks Kempczinski if he has any advice for how to eat on camera, the CEO chuckles and says, “the biggest thing is just dive right in, so I’m looking forward to taking a nice bite outta this chicken nugget.” He then takes a bite that, according to a lot of people, is not a nice bite, but a rather small bite, especially in comparison to Higgins.
This didn’t escape the internet’s attention for one second. YouTuber @garron_music posted a clip of Kempczinski eating the nugget, saying afterwards (in what I hope I don’t need to tell you is a tone dripping with sarcasm), “I’ve never seen such carnage on screen. That nugget never stood a chance.” Another person, pitching in in the comment section of the clip, said, “I think he made it worse… He hated that nuggie.” Honestly, this man can’t catch a break.
The CEOs Are Taking Over The Airwaves
Kempczinski’s new interview is the latest in the Big Arch Saga, but it’s also the latest moment of a fast food CEO getting front and center to discuss their business and products in what we assume is intended to be a more personable manner. Kempczinski himself arguably started this, but other CEOs have been getting in on the fun.
This started with them delivering their own responses to the McDonald’s head’s video (see the Burger King president’s reply for evidence here). Still, it’s recently become a little broader: Just a couple of weeks back, Raising Cane’s CEO Todd Graves revealed his secret menu items, while the Five Guys CEO discussed giving away a huge amount of money to his employees because, and I quote, “I didn’t want anybody shooting me in the back or anything.” Huh. These guys just can’t stay off the mic.
