Food companies, manufacturers, and retailers are constantly changing their recipes – and it’s no surprise that this is a source of constant discussion amongst customers. This year, we’ve seen recipe changes come at us at a near-constant clip, with Burger King updating its Whopper, Oreo changing its Cakester recipe, and Crumbl reforming its chocolate chip cookie. In all of these cases, though, those brands have informed their customers that things are gonna change – and they also did so with a clear mission to improve their products.

However, one recent change has people split. And the retailer who enacted the change (which is good old Aldi) didn’t exactly shout it from the rooftops; customers figured it out themselves.

Millville Chewy Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bars: All Change Here

Last week, two separate people took to Reddit to discuss their suspicions that Aldi had quietly altered the recipe for its Millville Chewy Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bars. They felt different…but were they changed for the better, to borrow a phrase from “For Good” from Wicked?

Forgive that dip into musical theater, but no, people aren’t entirely convinced they are. One of the people who posted a thread definitely felt that there was an improvement: “To my pleasant surprise these are much more chewy than the ones they used to sell,” they said, before going on to recommend purchasing them. The other person, however, said that they were now “absolutely terrible.” Another person in the same thread chimed in to say that they had also gotten smaller, too. Whether you like the new version or not will likely depend on your taste, but we’re here to warn you that they might be slightly different next time you get them – so buy at your peril.

Why Have You Done This To Us, Aldi?

We’re not 100% sure of Aldi’s motives, but while it didn’t explicitly announce that the recipe for its Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bars was changing, it has been open about its new approach to ingredients. A few months ago, the retailer announced that it was cutting 44 ingredients from its products, as part of a push towards more natural ingredients lists and in line with regulatory pressure from the HHS and FDA.

This suspected alteration to its product could be one of the earlier instances of this happening. Or – and this is what customers think over on Reddit – it could just be that Aldi’s reduced the quality of its product on the sly in a bid to reduce production costs. And if that’s the case, we all know it wouldn’t be the first time a retailer has been accused of such a thing.
