Margaritas have a culture of glassware/equipment surrounding them (as well as a ring of salt). The sound of a blender lets any good pool party know frozen margs are on the way. And Chili’s El Presidente Margarita comes in that iconic blue-beaked Martini-style glass.

And yet, somehow, margaritas have made a clean, smooth, tangy transition to canned cocktail culture (which is generous, ever-giving, and features newly released offerings from Snoop and Dre, FYI). By now, canned margaritas are as ubiquitous in the summertime as wafting SPF fumes and the sticky slap of sandals on hot concrete. That’s why we’ve gone ahead and curated a neat little (mostly) tequila-laced list of six of the best sippable canned margaritas for a sultry, easy-does-it kind of summer.

The Margarita Not-So-Madness

Post Meridiem Texas Spicy Margarita ― Why not start with a bang? Squat though it is, this fiesty, fiery contender from Post Meridiem packs a 22.5% ABV punch, and a round, red-fisted flavor profile. Made with lime juice, OJ, orange curacao, and jalapeno, it’s tiny, tasty, and tough.

Cutwater Lime Margarita ― On the other hand, this marg is as classic, unfussy, and well-proportioned as canned margaritas come, with Cutwater’s award-winning tequila, lime, and triple sec doing a tangy balancing act (which almost masks the beefy 12.5% ABV packed into a 12 ounce can).

Athletic Brewing Co. Mango “Margarita” ― Yes, the tequila and triple sec may be missing from this 0% ABV designated driver-thank you gift offering from Athletic Brewing Co., but what’s actually in the can more than makes up for it: real lime and mango, delicate sweetness of agave and a pinch of puckering salt. (At zero proof, it’s the lowest cal offering on the list.)

On the Rocks Sparkling Lime Margarita ― Most canned margaritas don’t have bubbles. This one does, and that’s why we like it. Made with Tres Generaciones tequila and their own house-made triple sec, it’s a slim can of bright lime, 10% ABV, with frisky little bubbles to pitch-hit for the salt.

Ole Cocktail Co. Strawberry Margarita ― It’s not just strawberry, but strawberry, orange, and a little perky dash of habanero that flesh out this zippy 12oz offering from Ole. A dash of salt and the spritz of carbonation make it refreshingly crushable, which should be just fine at 5.2% ABV.

De Soi Spicy Haute Margarita (Mocktail) ― If you weren’t aware, De Soi dabbles just a little bit in the whole adaptogenic world―think Lion’s mane, L-theanine (the kind of things you might find in an organic energy drink, perhaps?). So even though this 0% ABV can from De Soi won’t give you a buzz, it might ease you into some citrus-laced feel-goods.

She's unapologetically against macaroni salad and believes Sour Patch Kids are an acceptable substitute for cherry tomatoes in a salad.
