To be quite honest with you folks, I didn’t really expect this whole protein thing to get this far. But, if there’s anything we should know about food trends its that each and every time period will have their own fad diet people get all wrapped up in. The ’90s had low-fat and fat-free products galore, and we, of course, have protein. And it’s not all bad. I mean, at least the protein craze is mainly about adding one of the essential macronutrients into your diet at a greater volume rather than eliminating it like the fat-free craze did, right?

This Is Not The Weirdest Protein Product
With modern innovation, some pretty interesting creations have come out of the protein craze, too. I didn’t realize how much stuff could be made high-protein quite frankly. From cookies and Pop-Tarts to marshmallows and chips, it seems like anything and everything is just one experiment away from being protein-ified.
And perhaps the single-most interesting thing to come about from this trend is the creation of protein sodas. They’re pretty new on the market, but clear whey protein has really opened up a whole new world of possibilities. And now, jumping on this opportunity is one of the original protein champions that’s been around since 1997, Premier Protein.
Healthier Than Other Soda?
Before we get into the flavors of this new soda, let’s break down the elephant in the room—the protein. Each can of the Premier Protein Sparkling Protein Soda is made with clear whey protein and comes in at 15 grams of protein. Plus, there’s only 3 grams of sugar per can making these kind of an ideal sip for anyone with strategic health goals. But the real kicker of this launch (and the thing that makes drinking protein soda enjoyable, if we’re being honest) are the four bold flavors. Premier Protein says that with this launch, “Hitting your protein goals has never tasted this refreshing.”
Frankly, after reading up on the flavors they went with for the launch, I’m inclined to believe their claim. They’re bright and densely fruity sounding. And, best of all, none of them really sound like they’re trying to duplicate a true “cola” flavor in a healthier format. The flavors Premier Protein went with instead in this launch are lemon-lime, grapefruit, black cherry, and pineapple orange. Protein aside, these are all soda flavors I’d reach for in a heart beat.
Whether or not these protein sodas are actually any good though is still yet to be determined. After all, things like this really always come down to the formulation. It’s really easy for health drinks to be all off-balance and have some quality that makes them unpleasant like a strangely thick viscosity. But the flavors sound good, so we here at Sporked our keeping our minds and palates open to Premier Protein’s success with this launch.
