Trending foods: They’re a fact of modern life. There’s an argument to be made that there have always been trending foods (I refuse to believe that the rise of the Jell-O salad, for example, or the cheese ball, was driven by much apart from people jumping on the bandwagon for their aesthetic qualities and novelty), but in 2026, we simply cannot move for them. Dot cakes were one such food that now feels like a bit of a distant memory, despite being wildly popular just a few months ago, to the point where Publix stocked its own version. We were fans of it, incidentally, but that’s just by the by.

Well, if you’ve found yourself missing the dot cake days of yore (ie., June 2026), then we’ve got a treat for you. You can make yourself a dot fruit salad. If you’ve got some time on your hands, that is.

Dot Fruit Salad

The dot fruit salad was around while the dot cake was in its reigning era on TikTok, but a recent article from Food & Wine reminded us that it’s still holding space online. The concept of a dot fruit salad is simple: Emulate the effect you’d get on top of dot cakes, but with mini fruit balls instead. One video from @foodbites, which has garnered a million likes in the last few months, demonstrated how it’s done. You need a melon baller, your fruits of choice, a bowl, and a lot – and I mean a lot – of patience. You turn each fruit into tiny little balls, arrange them in your bowl in a very aesthetic manner (either by keeping them separate, or mixing them up), and then post the video that you inevitably made of yourself making it online.

Naturally, you need firm fruit to make this work – and, for the visual of the salad, you also need fruits with different colors. Melon, watermelon, peaches, and kiwis are all popular choices. Like other fruit salads, there’s no real need to dress it, but we guess you could, if you want.

Is It Really Worth The Work?

That entirely depends on how much you value appearance over free time. Dot fruit salads take FOREVER to make. Yes, there’s a meditative aspect to it, and a definite pleasure in the visual appearance of the salad — and in having every piece of fruit the same size — but it’s an exercise in patience. If you’re looking to jazz up your Insta reels page with a confetti-colored dish, though, then this is the one for you. Just put aside a spare hour.
