Dot cakes are still the sweet treat of the moment. For the last month, the people of the internet (and, specifically, the people of TikTok) have been falling head over heels for these sprinkle-covered, cute-as-a-button cakes: The dot cakes trend started from the baked goods made by appropriately-named bakery The Dotcakes going viral, but now, everyone’s getting involved.

Including Publix! The grocery chain is now stocking its own dot cake, and its speedy move to jump on the batter-based obsession of the moment has paid off. Here’s the lowdown.
Publix Dot Cakes: Quick Work
Publix dropped the news that it was bringing a dot cake for its bakery section last week on Instagram, and the post debuting its new delight got a lot of traction – as you’d expect for an item that arrived right in the eye of the storm of a trend. Seriously, though. Dot cakes have only been big online for about a month, and Publix managing to turn this one around that quickly is pretty impressive, considering how long product development can take in major grocery chains.
But, to the cake itself! Publix’s dot cake is called a Sprinkle Crunch Shortcake, and it looks…pretty much exactly like other dot cakes! The difference, though, is that while other dot cakes are usually single-serving, Publix’s looks like it’d comfortably serve three to four people. The Sprinkle Crunch Shortcake comes in both vanilla and chocolate flavors, with two layers of cake sandwiching buttercream, and with more buttercream on top – which is, of course, adorned with a bunch of rainbow sprinkles. And it only costs $5! Come on. That’s not bad.
The People Yearn For Dot Cakes
I know I’m talking a lot about Publix’s timing here, but the fact that it’s been able to get its Sprinkle Crunch Shortcake into stores so fast has benefited it enormously in the court of public opinion. If it were just a few weeks too late, the comment section would be full of yawning and eyeroll emojis. Here, though, people are excited – and it helps that the cake is, by all accounts, very good. “Believe the hype,” said a customer, before saying that they tried one and it was pure fire. That opinion’s held pretty universally in the comments.
Well, at least this cake is going down better than some of the pub subs it brought out back in April, which weren’t exactly, shall we say, beloved by customers. You’ve redeemed yourself here, Publix. Get your dot cakes now!
