Like any other meat, bacon can vary significantly in quality. When it’s good, it’s the best damn thing you’ve ever eaten in your life (if you eat meat, obviously); just the right balance of crunchiness to chewiness, salty and savory beyond compare…you don’t need me to tell you all this, but it’s nice to remind myself anyway. And when it’s bad? Well, you of course know what that’s like too. Stringy, unbalanced, unpleasant, sometimes inedible. Good bacon good. Bad bacon bad.

As a budget retailer, no one would be surprised if Aldi’s bacon fell on the latter end of the spectrum. But you’d be surprised, folks. If you’re not buying it there, it might be time to start.
Aldi Appleton Farms Premium Sliced Bacon: The Pick Of The Bunch
At just over $4 per pound, Aldi Appleton Farms Premium Sliced Bacon doesn’t have a price tag that indicates it would be the best around – but that’s not what Wirecutter and Aldi’s legion of customers think. A few days ago, the publication conducted a taste test of 22 brands of bacon and voted Aldi’s option as the best of the bunch, making it one of the best things to buy at the store. “We enjoyed the nuanced flavoring on these hardwood-smoked strips, bracingly salty with tinges of sweetness and a smokiness evocative of the deep South,” they said, before going on to praise its texture, which hit all the consistency notes you’d want in a great bacon.
Plenty of Aldi shoppers agree, with the general consensus on its Appleton Farms Premium Sliced Bacon being that it’s one of the most solid picks for its price point out there. Naturally, there are naysayers, as well as more expensive options – but if you need a few good slices that won’t break the budget, it’s more than a safe bet.
And We Thought So Too…
Back in 2025, we conducted a taste test of the best bacon, and placed Aldi’s Applewood bacon fourth (specifically the thick-sliced version), giving it a 9/10 rating. In case you were wondering, we put Pederson’s Natural Farms No Sugar Added Hickory Smoked Uncured Bacon first, with its hickory flavor giving it an impressive amount of complexity (and the fact it’s from humanely raised pigs is also a positive). Look, all I’m saying is, you have options. And all of this is reminding me that I’m well overdue for a bacon-filled brunch at some point soon. The weekend’s only two days away, folks. Let’s go big.
