I Tried New Firecracker Pop OREOs and They Didn’t Blow Me Away

Starting today, OREO‘s newest seasonal cookie hits shelves nationwide: Firecracker Pop. This popsicle-inspired golden sandwich cookie is packed with a triple-layer of creme to best emulate the experience of enjoying what inspired it. As a huge Rocket Pop fan (seriously, I bought the officially licensed Firecracker chain last year), I’ve been looking forward to this ever since OREO shared the early news with us last month.

New Summer OREO!

Pros: The three distinct layers of creme deliver blue raspberry, lemon, and cherry in spades. If you’ve been clamoring for a fruity golden OREO ever since they dropped “Fruity Crisp” back in 2016, this is exactly what you’ve been waiting for. I should really toss a few in the freezer and see if they’re better cold…

Cons: I’m not sure whether it’s my brain fighting against the idea of a fruity OREO or a disconnect between the wafer’s flavor and the three flavors of creme filling, but I am not loving this like I thought I would. (Is the wafer supposed to embody the flavor of a popsicle stick?) After some layer deconstruction, I know I enjoy the creme… but I don’t think it belongs in this cookie. OREO has done some amazing work in the field of dessert-flavored sandwich cookies; there’s no shame in missing the mark a little every once in a while.

(And again, no popping candy? It’s Firecracker Pop, come on.)

Are any other cookout-ready OREO cookies hitting shelves right now?

Luckily for us, this isn’t the only seasonally-appropriate sandwich cookie in stores this summer. A fan-favorite OREO flavor is actually returning to shelves right now; I didn’t even know to look for it until I found a full display at Meijer, of all places. Yes, Sm’OREO cookies are back for another run. I’m surprised we’re getting these so soon after the release of the Marvel OREO “Masked Decadence” cookies (which I described as “Sm’OREOs but better” in my review).
