We Tried Crumbl’s New Minecraft Cake (And We’re Tired Of Mediocre)

This week’s rotating Crumbl menu was one quite unexpected, but equally exciting to cookie and video game fans alike. The über popular video game Minecraft is entering the cookie space this week, and in doing so, their collaboration with Crumbl welcomes six themed sweet treats. Five of them are based around different flavors of cookies, as one would expect from Crumbl, but one treat is a cake themed around one of the most iconic symbols of the game: a grass block. Naturally, we knew we’d need to try this one out for ourselves. Here’s what we think.

A Collaboration Disappointment

Pros — Alright, let’s get into the why this cake was good, because (big shocker, I know) it was mainly downhill from here. What I do have to say that’s positive about this cake is that it looked like it was supposed to, and the resemblance to the actual Minecraft source material was there. And yeah, it’s kind of the bare minimum. But, at least they did it. They didn’t do it particularly well since piping that needs to be precise really highlights how Crumbl’s bakers aren’t necessarily trained to be doing intricate decorating, but instead to produce baked goods at a very high volume. The crooked piping I can excuse for the most part though, out of sympathy for what bakers with constantly changing menus have to endure. And, overall the point got across: visually, the cake represented a Minecraft Grass Block.

Cons — Unsurprisingly, it’s much easier to find negatives for this cake. For starters, cream cheese frosting is easy to make… and it’s easy to make well, too. Crumbl themselves is capable of it as we’ve tried far superior versions of their cream cheese frosting on a pretty regular basis. Instead, the cream cheese frosting for this cake is stiff, grainy, and far too sweet. Plus, I simply can’t see the reasoning behind choosing to dye frosting brown instead of simply making it chocolate flavored when you’ve already introduced a chocolate flavor elsewhere in the cake.

The cake has quite similar irredeemable qualities which only compounded with the frosting to make quite an unpleasant bite. The cake itself was dry and rubbery, not to mention its overall confusing flavor. It was a vanilla cinnamon sponge topped with a cinnamon brown sugar topping and a chocolate crumb streusel. It didn’t need all of that and the overall flavor ended up just being underwhelming. Plus an already dry cake and frosting in addition to a chocolate streusel in the mix was redundantly dry.

No part of the cake had a delightful texture and the overwhelming sweetness and indiscernible taste made it just so mediocre. It’s just poor recipe and development, because pretty much every component could have been so easily made better. Not to mention that the little collaboration decoration on top feels like a throwaway shot at adding value to this cake.
