Whether you love candy or you’ve just buried your love of candy deep, deep down under all those other adult concerns like taxes, it’s hard to avoid candy this time of year.

But as many mountains of classic Halloween candies pile up, there’s one kind of candy that’s a bit harder to find―but just as special, just as festive, and incredibly important as a candy category (all year long). And that’s Halloween candy that’s allergy-friendly.
But we’re confident it’s out there, especially as major organizations like the Girl Scouts of America are highlighting cookies that are specifically attentive to the “Big 9” allergens: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. There are, of course, more allergens out there, but these are the most common. So we decided to scout out some of the best allergy-friendly Halloween candies you can find―because everybody deserves to eat just a bit too much sugar this time of year.
*This list is full of (tasty) suggestions, but if you or someone you know have allergies, always make sure your specific allergy is addressed by the product and/or clearly indicated “safe” on the packaging.
No Whey! Foods Choco No No’s Minis – $23
Another bigger allergy-friendly brand, No Whey! Foods has a fun variety of allergy-friendly snacks out there (with fun names like PeaNot Cups and Bag of Terror). Here you’ll get 2 bags with 8 mini-bags each of an M&M’s type candy that are colorful, tasty, top 9 allergen-free and also free of milk, nut, and soy.
YumEarth Organic Halloween Candies Variety Box – $29
YumEarth’s variety box is a good choice because (as the name suggests) you get a variety of treats, even if it’s a bit pricey. It’s also a small variety―you’ll get lollipops, fruit snacks, and basically the YumEarth version of Skittles―but you get the “top 9 allergen-free” right on the packaging, which might be a great reassurance to already seasonally-beleaguered parents.
No Whey! Mummy Smooches – $11.95
Another offering from No Whey! You can probably guess from the name that these are their version of a spooky Hershey Kiss (again, the brand really does have fun with its names). There’s no dairy, no peanut, no tree nut, no gluten, and no soy in these vegan “smooches,” and they’re wrapped up in sparkly purple―perfect for Halloween. (No Whey! also does a 3-pack of cute vegan chocolate Halloween lollipops, but considering the price of $12.95, those are more boutique―better for a small party than your “Take One” Halloween bowl.)
Skittles Halloween Variety Mix, Funsize – $10
Skittles are almost always included in seasonal allergy-friendly candy lists because, like Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish, they’re free from most of the major allergens (though this refers only to the chewy kind―as candies innovate it’s always important to keep up with new ingredients!). Of course, like Swedish Fish, they’ll contain corn and artificial dyes, but in this 50-bag variety pack that means you also get Wild Berry and Shriekers flavors.
Sour Patch Kids & Swedish Fish Mini Variety Pack – $10
According to KidswithFoodAllergies.org, Swedish Fish are free of milk, egg, soy, peanut, tree nuts, coconut, sesame, wheat, gluten, fish, and shellfish. And the whole tangy Sour Patch family is also free of the Top 9, so this (affordable) bag of 80 individually-wrapped treats is a safely spooky bet. (Not to mention you get watermelon sour patch wedges in addition to the Swedish Fish minis and classic Kids.)
Charms Organic Halloween Pops – $9.99
Charms is another great brand to get to know―free of 7 of the top 9 allergens, but also widely available (unlike some of the other brands here, which you’re better off ordering on Amazon or the company site). The pops are organic and cheerfully wrapped and (most importantly) free of gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, shellfish, fish, and sesame.
Free2b Sunflower Seed Buttercups – $29.99
Free2b is a good allergy-friendly brand in general―yes, because they’re free of the top major allergens, plus mustard and sulfites, but also because they’re available at places like Walmart. Oh, and then there’s the fact that they do a nice, rich, sunflower seed-filled dupe of everyone’s-favorite-allergy-unfriendly Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Yes, they’re expensive (this is the online price) but you get a bag of 20 and you just might see a kid’s eyes light up because he finally sees a nutty, buttery chocolate “cup” candy that’s safe for him to eat.
LesserEvil Spooky Space Balls Snack Pack – $10.99
LesserEvil is another well-established brand, perfect for that salty break from all the Halloween sweet. You can order them from the LesserEvil site or probably find them at your local Target. What you won’t find in this 18-pack of Spooky Space Balls Real Organic Cheddar snacks are most of the major allergens―the brand emphasizes its Clean Label certification and the fact that the facility is completely nut-free. They’re also made with no seed oils (though they do contain milk and are manufactured in a facility that uses eggs).
