Artichokes are among the most overlooked superfoods in the produce section. It makes sense—they’re expensive, time-consuming, and difficult to prep if you’re unfamiliar with them. That’s where the best canned artichokes and the best jarred artichoke hearts come in. From casual snacking to gooey, cheesy artichoke dips, these preserved artichoke hearts can save you from trimming thorns and steaming for an hour.
How we chose the brands of jarred and canned artichokes
We searched for every brand of preserved artichokes available at major nationwide grocery stores. We wanted to include accessible options like Del Monte and Mezzetta alongside more niche products from specialty grocers like Sprouts and Aldi. While, in general, jarred artichokes taste better than what you’ll find in a can, we focused on finding a couple of high quality, cost-effective options for the best canned artichokes, too.
What we looked for in the best jarred and the best canned artichoke hearts
Whether quartered, halved, or whole artichoke hearts, every brand of the best jarred and canned artichokes should taste as fresh as possible. Since jarred and canned artichokes typically contain vinegars and acids to preserve them, we’re ideally looking for brands that have notably less sour and acidic flavor overall. They can be varying degrees of tender—some people prefer snacking on artichokes that are more cooked, while others want slightly firmer leaves for their salads and antipasti plates. We found options for both.

- Del Monte Artichoke Hearts
-
Del Monte is just one of those brands of canned veggies you can always trust. We liked their canned corn, canned spinach, and canned carrots, just to name a few. While these aren’t the absolute best canned artichoke hearts on our list, the quality is still good all around. These are super tender and not overly salty. They might be slightly more vinegary and smaller in size than our #1 best canned artichokes, but honestly? If this brand is easily available to you, you really can’t go wrong.

- Sprouts Canned Artichokes
-
Sprouts canned artichokes really hit all the marks. The artichoke hearts are actually whole, not quartered, and have a noticeable freshness that you don’t see often from canned goods. The hearts are very tender and lightly tangy. The brine doesn’t carry too strong of a flavor, either, which is what we want from anything canned. That said, if you don’t shop at Sprouts regularly, Del Monte is still a perfectly fine choice.

- Caramia Artichoke Hearts in Water
-
Caramia’s Artichoke Hearts really surprised me! Since these aren’t marinated in oil, I figured the water would strip the artichokes of any real flavor and mess with the texture. I couldn’t have been more wrong—the artichoke is just as tender and fragrant as the others I tried. The flavor carries pretty much the same amount of acid as the rest, but if you’re looking for artichoke hearts sans oil, I really recommend them. Wrapped in prosciutto? Delicious. Thrown on top of a pizza, which is already oily enough? Simply perfect.

- Jeff’s Garden Artichoke Hearts
-
Jeff’s Garden Artichoke Hearts are distinct in two ways: First, the leaves and hearts are noticeably a bit firmer than every other brand on this list. Second, despite all that fragrant, seasoned, oily brine, the artichokes themselves taste remarkably fresh and slightly less acidic than what you’re probably used to from marinated artichokes. That flavor balance is exactly what we’re looking for in the best jarred artichoke hearts. The downside? It comes at a slightly higher price, from a brand that’s not as accessible. (We found these artichokes at Sprouts for $5.99.) While the texture and price point might not be enticing to everyone, they’re still absolutely some of the best jarred artichoke hearts we tried in this taste test, hands down.

- Mezzetta Marinated Artichoke Hearts
-
Mezzetta’s artichoke hearts are herby, oily, and beautifully seasoned, with a bold flavor that makes them stand out. They’re a little firmer than some of the other options we tried, but still quite tender, with pleasantly squeaky leaves that give them a satisfying bite. It’s a nice middle ground, in case you’re baking them into a dish or simply enjoy snacking on something a little less cooked. Be warned, though—they’re pretty salty, so they might not be for everyone, but if you like your artichokes punchy and well-marinated, these are a great pick.

- Napoleon Grilled Artichoke Hearts
-
If right now you’re thinking, “Grilled artichokes? In first place? Really, Ariana?” with a dubious little smirk on your face… well, that’s fair. I struggled, okay? I struggled to pick the absolute best jarred artichoke hearts. Mezzetta are delicious and addictive, but incredibly salty. Caramia are wonderfully versatile for cooking, but most people are looking for a brine with oil. And that leads me here, to Napoleon’s Grilled Artichoke Hearts. I had to make a choice, and I went with the ones we all kept going back to snack on. With a savory, charred, slightly smoky flavor that really sets them apart, these grilled artichokes deserve a bit of spotlight. Any antipasto platter would be lucky to have them. I literally took these home and put them on my chicken piccata for dinner, and the experience was nothing short of spiritual enlightenment.
