Over the last few months, there have been some international fast food releases that have stopped me in my tracks – sometimes because of how good they sound, and sometimes because they’re…out there, shall we say. Cases in point: KFC China’s Oreo Chicken Burger, Pizza Hut Japan’s curry cheese pizza, and the follow-up from the latter, the noodle pizza. While I don’t think I could stomach the Oreo Chicken Burger, the latter two did have me wondering how much it would cost to get myself to Tokyo in time to sample them.

Turns out, I couldn’t afford it. But this new release from KFC Singapore? It’s got me counting my pennies all over again. Be warned, though, if you don’t like breading, you might want to keep scrolling.
KFC Singapore Surf N’ Turf Kentaco
Last week, KFC Singapore debuted a new menu item that takes the concept of surf and turf to a whole new level. Introducing the Surf N’ Turf Kentaco, which combines seafood and chicken (so we’re already straying from the classic combo of seafood and beef) in a Double Down-style sandwich. The clue’s in the name here: The Kentaco is a seafood taco where the shell is made out of a fried chicken patty, curled around a tempura shrimp, with a Southern Slaw to finish it all off. Crunch on crunch on crunch.
Now, naturally, this one’s not going to be for anyone who prefers their meat batter-free – but if they do, they’re probably not going to be eating in KFC in the first place. The Surf N’ Turf Kentaco also comes with a Seafood Dip, which is apparently a Lobster Bisque-style affair (only in a little cup), and folks can get it as a platter meal if they so choose. Oh, and if they upgrade to a Kentaco Box, they’ll also get two chicken tenders and whipped potato added to the taco. This is…a busy meal.
But Is It Good?
You know what? Apparently, it really is. A review of KFC’s Surf N Turf Kentaco, posted on Facebook, said that “the combination works surprisingly well,” also shouting out the dip as the MVP of the dish. The review does also state, though, that this absolutely isn’t something you can eat without a lot of mess. That’s hardly a spoiler alert, though: If you’re expecting a fried chicken taco with a prawn inside to be elegant, you might be looking in the wrong place.
Will this meal make it to menus elsewhere? If I were a betting man, absolutely not. But do I want to try it? You bet I do — for the sheer novelty of it all. Pass the napkins, please.
