Krispy Kreme just dropped six doughnuts based on everyone’s favorite monster-collecting video game franchise (unless you’re one of those weird Digimon kids). The doughnuttery was nice enough to send over all six of these new pocket monster-themed treats; let’s find out which ones are worth catching and which should be thrown back.

Practically by default, this is the least exciting doughnut in the bunch. I actually preferred the non-decorated doughnuts in the provided 12-pack to these. I’ll always take an original glazed over a non-flavored iced variant. A single stripe of chocolate icing does not overcome my love for the joy of shattering the glaze on a classic.

In my initial coverage, I said I felt bad about Bulbasaur (Pokémon #1, lest we forget) getting the least exciting recipe. Now that I’ve tried the entire lineup, I can confirm… this is worth feeling bad about. This is a vanilla iced doughnut with a few extra steps that I’m not sure were worth it. Points for the attempt to replicate the promotional image’s icing leaf quality, but my local decorator might need a few more seconds per doughnut to really nail the foliage here.

Here we enter the category of doughnuts that can actually stand for themselves without having a Pokémon topper. Anything cotton candy is fighting an uphill battle with me, your favorite ex-cotton candy carny. That said, the airy buttercream topping on this doughnut really lends itself to the flavor of something you regularly experience in a very texturally light format. I still don’t really get how this is Squirtle-coded, but I’ll concede to the flavor at least.

I’m a sucker for a lemon donut, so this bright-yellow doughnut was always going to deliver what I look for in my rounded pastries. That said, a strong lemon curd filling would have delivered more of a flavor “jolt” than this softer creme filling. Also, the densely packed nonpareils are so crunchy. When I think of Krispy Kreme, I think of super-soft glazed doughnuts long before I think of a place that delivers crunch. Despite the Pikachu on top, nothing here is particularly electrifying.

This is a solid strawberry-iced donut regardless of the round pink IP on top. The strawberry cookie crumble and icing combined deliver a sweet, strawberry shortcake-adjacent treat worth singing about… even if I think Ms. Puff is more deserving of a strawberry-filled donut considering she’s already that shape.

I called this the likely winner in my initial coverage, based on the flavor combination and personal stance that filled donuts are just better than iced rings. It looks like my tenure as a doughnut reviewer is paying off, because this s’mores-esque filled doughnut absolutely delivered what I was hoping for. The red and gold sugar sparkles on top are also a pleasant alternative to the more texturally noticeable nonpareils and sprinkles found on the other doughnuts. (I can’t believe this is the only even partially-chocolate offering in this entire batch.)
