Y2K nostalgia and all of the trends that came with the start of the 21st century are back with a vengeance (I might be the only one who refuses to wear velour or don another pair of low-rise pants ever again). But it’s not just the movies, music, and fashion of the decade that’s back in style. We’ve even stepped back in time with some food trends reappearing after 20-plus years of being out of date.

And McDonald’s is leaning all the way into the resurgence of the 2000s. The only catch? We don’t get to take advantage of any of the nostalgic, totally awesome 2000s food happenings at McDonald’s here in the United States.

The 2000s Are Back at McDonald’s (But Only In Germany)

The 2000s have returned to McDonald’s — but only if you happen to live in or be visiting Germany. McDonald’s restaurants in Germany are bringing back the era with a musical twist that comes with your meal.

The promotion is kind of like a Happy Meal for adults who remember the 2000s all too well. When you order select combo meals at Germany’s McDonald’s restaurants, you’ll get one of five different miniature radios with your food. Each radio is styled after a retro boombox and, when you push the button, they play a 30-second snippet of a song that was popular during the decade.

As the McDonald’s Germany website describes them, “the 30-second song snippets catapult you ba da bababa back into the millennium.” (We won’t judge McDonald’s on the fact that two of the five songs are actually from the 2010s, not 2000s.)

The mini radios are reminiscent of the HitClips offered at U.S. McDonald’s restaurants back in 2000. However, they are a bit different. These radios are legendary in Germany, and now anyone can take a trip back in time and get their hands on one — no actual time travel required.

One radio is available as an add-on to two McMenu meals: the Breakfast Duo Grande or the McCafé Duo Grande. Each radio features one song, which means you can wind up with any one of the following tunes:

  • “Sk8er Boi” by Avril Lavigne
  • “Toxic” by Britney Spears
  • “Sorry” by Justin Bieber
  • “Dream” by Cro
  • “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry

Enjoy Throwback Music and Meals For a Limited Time

In addition to those miniature radios that’ll have you jamming out to 2000s (or 2010s) hits, McDonald’s Germany is also introducing a chance to “taste-time travel” with the return of meals and meal deals from the Y2K years.

If you happen to be in Germany, you’ll be able to try a menu of equally nostalgic and “retro” items, including:

  • Legendary Burgers like the popular McFarmer, 1955 Burger, McCrispy 1955, and vegetarian McVeggie Smoky.
  • 6 Cheese Tops, which feature melty Brie cheese covered in crispy breading and paired with a dip.
  • Cheeseburger Style McShaker Fries, or classic fries covered in a cheeseburger flavoring.
  • Chicken & Cheese Box featuring 12 crispy Chicken McNuggets, six cheese tips, and three dips of your choice.
  • Curly Fries, a twisted version of the original.
  • McFlurry Daim
  • Hot Cherry Bag

All of these unique offerings only have us wishing we could hop over to Germany to give them a taste.

What people actually eat? That's way more fun. She's always down to debate the best fast-food fries, has a soft spot for Chick-fil-A, firmly believes a great cauliflower taco can change your day, and will never walk past a cute (perhaps even bear-shaped) novelty cup without considering whether it needs to come home with her.
