5 Nostalgic ‘90s Snacks and Treats That Are Back (and Almost Just as Good)

Sure, the world might be fondly reminiscing about the Y2K era of the early 2000s right now when it comes to both fashion and food, but we’re still stuck in the 1990s. Specifically, I’m craving the snacks, sweets, and sips from my childhood — the highly colorful (and equally highly processed) candies, baked goods, and even chips that got us through the decade, only to disappear once the ‘90s switched over into the ‘00s.

While I’m still waiting for the original 3D Doritos to make a grand return in the correct flavor (that answer is obviously Nacho Cheese, if you’re wondering), there are a number of foods and drinks from the 1990s that actually have returned. I’ve rounded them up and determined whether or not they live up to our nostalgia… and their original greatness.

Dunkaroos

What ‘90s kid didn’t adore opening their lunchbox to find a bright blue container of Dunkaroos waiting for them? It was always my dream to have frosting right out of the container as a legit meal, and that’s exactly what Dunkaroos let me do. Those vanilla cookies paired with rainbow sprinkle-embedded frosting ready for dipping were flawless.

Dunkaroos had a solid run from 1990 until about 2012. Then, the 1990s favorite made a grand return in 2020, brightening the world in the middle of the pandemic — and they’ve stuck around. You can pick up a box of the original vanilla with rainbow sprinkle vanilla frosting today, or try one of the newer options like chocolate cookies and double chocolate frosting or Cinnamon Toast Crunch cookies and double chocolate frosting. And yes, they taste just as amazing as you remember; nothing has changed.

Yoplait Trix Yogurt

If, like me, you enjoyed ripping the lid off a small cup of Yoplait Trix Yogurt in the 1990s and mixing the boldly-colorful yogurt inside until it turned gray, then I’ve got good news. Yoplait Trix Yogurt made a comeback, and you can grab a pack of yogurt cups at your local Walmart or grocery store right now. 

Yes, Yoplait Trix Yogurt did disappear for a bit there, but it returned in 2013. Its name has changed slightly, and so too has the final product. This dual-hued kid-friendly yogurt now goes by Yoplait Kids Yogurt Cup, and it’s available in slightly more muted color combinations (and the characters on the box have kept up with today’s kids, too, with branding themed after Bluey, Spidey and Friends, and so on). But don’t worry: If the strawberry banana flavor combo was your jam, it’s still here, and it tastes virtually unchanged.

Creme Savers

For a time there in the 1990s, I was a dedicated fan of two candies: Butterfinger BBs (RIP) and Creme Savers. Rarely am I a hard candy kind of person, but Creme Savers were simply so good. Fruity yet rich at the same time, they felt like they turned into an authentically creamy treat as they dissolved in your mouth. And no matter whether you popped an original Strawberries & Creme or a brighter Orange & Creme, the result was just delicious.

Creme Savers had a pretty lengthy run; they stuck around until 2011 and survived a bit of a rebrand and repackaging. Just 10 years later nostalgia brought them back, and in 2021 Creme Savers returned to stores in their original berry-sweet flavor. And, having bought multiple packs of the “new” version, let me just say they’re everything you remember. They’re fantastic in flavor and irresistible if you loved the original.

Hubba Bubba Bubble Jug

Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum was everywhere in the ‘90s, particularly in the form of the hot pink Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape, which allow kids (and adults) to roll out an awful lot of gum and create massive bubbles. That fun format was followed by another memorable one: the Hubba Bubba Bubble Jug, which put small, powder-like pieces of Hubba Bubba’s gum into a little jug. Chew that powdery gum, and you could also blow some seriously cool bubbles.

But, in the early 2000s, the Bubble Jug disappeared. Nearly 20 years in 2024, it reappeared — and today, you can pick up the Hubba Bubba Bubble Jug once again while you’re checking out at your local Walmart. Iconic Candy rereleased the product in a similar-looking if not identical jug, bringing powdered gum to the masses. And while I was never a huge fan of the original bubblegum flavor, which plenty of people say is exactly like it was in the ‘90s, I do like the new tropical fruit-inspired alternative.

SoBe Elixir

If you couldn’t get enough of SoBe’s eye-catching rainbow of glass-bottled Elixir drinks in the 1990s, you’re not alone. The drinks were not only everywhere, but sweet, flavor-packed, and oh-so-drinkable. But after struggling under PepsiCo in the mid-2000s, SoBe Elixir essentially disappeared from store shelves. They’ve since returned (in plastic bottles, unfortunately) and are now more readily available, though not as commonly found in stores as they were in the ‘90s.

Another downside? They do taste a bit more sugary and potent than you might remember from your youth. They’re not necessarily changed; rather, your tastebuds have likely changed when it comes to what you want out of a soda-adjacent beverage.
