The best bread to buy at the grocery store is moist, affordable, and perfect for a good meal.
There are so many types and styles of bread. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in the bread aisle. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of the best store bought bread so you know what to grab the next time you’re at the grocery store. Whether you’re aiming to build a sky-high club sandwich or looking for a side to accompany your rotisserie chicken, you will find the perfect product on our list of the best bread!
- Schär Gluten Free Artisan White Bread
-
Our gluten-free bread taste test was rough. We did it on our very first day in the Sporked office. Almost every bread was absolutely disgusting. This is one of the only taste tests that has ever made me feel sick. Luckily, it was all worth it because we found one impressive gluten-free bread: Schär’s! Sporked contributor Danny Palumbo felt it was “the most convincing bread” we tried. “Schar’s is sweet, sizable, and well-made,” he wrote. “It’s damn good all on its own, and it will make an excellent sandwich.”

- Sola Sweet Oat
-
Keto bread was another less-than-fun taste test here at Sporked. Gwynedd Stuart, our managing editor, was a real champ and ate loads of “bread” (hard to call most of it bread) to help us find an acceptable keto bread. She suggests that “this would make a really good French toast—soak it in some egg with a low-cal sweetener, toss it in a frying pan, and then top it with a sugar-free syrup (we recommend Cary’s).” Yum!

- La Brea Bakery Take & Bake French Dinner Rolls
-
Danny adored these La Brea Bakery Take & Bake French Dinner Rolls. He loved them so much that they topped the list of our best rolls. Danny liked that these rolls have “a restaurant quality, chewy, savory, yeasty” taste. He loved how the “crusty exterior encases a delightfully fluffy and warm center.” He recommended “[melting] a full tablespoon of butter on this and [indulging] in the decadent simplicity” or “[slicing] it open and [making] a tiny turkey slider with stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce.” If you’re search for the best bread is focused on rolls, buy these!

- Sunflour Baker Jewish Rye
-
Unlike most of the rye we tried, this rye bread comes frozen. We think this helps the bread taste so freshly made. Danny loved that “Sunflower Jewish Rye is chewy, dense, aromatic, seeded, and just lovely overall.” We all appreciated the subtle flavor and perfect chewiness. Danny thought this would be ideal for “a fat stack of pastrami and pickles.” I still regularly think about this rye and it’s definitely one of the best store bought bread loaves I’ve ever had.

- Sun-Maid Cinnamon Swirl Raisin Bread
-
We all agreed that the amount of raisins in Sun-Maid’s Cinnamon Swirl Raisin Bread is the only acceptable amount of raisins in cinnamon raising bread. As Danny puts it, you need those “deliciously sweet and fruity” raisins to compliment the “fragrant and spiced cinnamon swirl.” He also pointed out that “this bread is substantial but tears nicely,” and that “it toasts great and just absolutely begs to be spread with some deliciously creamy butter.”

- Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
-
I was skeptical at first, but Jiffy does make the best cornbread. They might as well put a picture of this box in the dictionary under the word “cornbread” (even though they call it “corn muffin mix”). Jiffy is the industry standard for cornbread mix. It bakes up moist and tender. The flavor is sweet, but not too sweet. It’s very mild and standard in the perfect way. That’s what makes it the best cornbread mix on our list of the best bread.

- Nature’s Harvest Stone Ground 100% Whole Wheat Bread
-
White bread who? Nature’s Harvest made me forget other types of bread exist. After tasting it, I can’t imagine why you’d ever want to make a sandwich on anything else. It’s pleasantly squishy but still has enough structural integrity to be stacked with all sorts of sandwich fixings, from meats to spreads to veggies. This bread’s best quality is a pleasant sweetness that adds something most other breads do not have. That flavor would work in a sweet preparation, like PB&J, or compliment contrasting flavors if it were used as a vehicle for something savory, like a Reuben. TLDR: This bread is perfect.

- Pepperidge Farm Garlic Bread
-
Gwynedd lead our best garlic bread taste test and Pepperidge Farm came out on top. She thoroughly enjoyed the “wonderfully crusty outside and the pillowy, oily innards.” She also loved that you have options when preparing this garlic bread: “You can leave the two halves of the baguette together in the oven if you like a super squishy center, or separate them and put them face up on a cookie sheet if you want the edges to crisp up a little bit…Either way, it’s perfection.”

- Nature’s Own Perfectly Crafted Thick Sliced White Bread
-
Nature’s Own Perfectly Crafted Thick Sliced White Bread tops our list of the best breads. It’s also the best white bread we tasted (duh). It hits all the notes you want in white bread: It’s super soft, lightly sweet, and has a mild flavor that wouldn’t overpower sandwich fillings. It would go well with peanut butter, banana, and honey. It would suit a grilled cheese or a tuna salad sandwich. Practically everything would be good between two slices of this bread. It’s also tasty enough to eat on its own, heavily slathered with butter. I’ll say it: This is the perfect white bread. Buy it ASAP!

For those of us who hate sweet cornbread, there’s Morrison’s Corn Kits. I’ve been using this brand since the early 70’s. Always moist and delicious. Great for making cornbread dressing. *not a sponsor 😁*
