Vegetarian or not, you’ve probably crossed paths with Amy’s. This longstanding vegetarian and organic brand has been dominating the canned soup and natural food aisles for decades. With more than 30 soup flavors in their lineup, we did what we do best: grabbed as many cans as we could find (about 17 in total) and taste-tested them all to bring you a definitive ranking of the best Amy’s soups.
What we looked for in the best Amy’s Soups
It’s all about bold flavors, people. Honestly, very few of Amy’s canned soups tasted outright bad, because the ingredients rarely come across as cheap or low-quality. But plenty of them didn’t deliver on flavor, and that’s where we have to draw the line. We are not in the business of bland.
How we conducted the taste test of the best Amy’s Soups
We poured each soup can into a bowl, microwaved them, and tried them side-by-side. You don’t have to take my word for it, by the way. We filmed the whole thing.

- Lentil (Light Sodium)
-
While I do think this lower sodium lentil soup needs a little salt (okay, a lot of salt), I understand I’m not the target demographic. This one is for the low-sodium girlies, and I’m a straight-up salt goblin myself. Still, it’s a solid, classic lentil soup that had me craving some baked polenta on the side. Like most of the best Amy’s soups, the ingredients are simple (green lentils, celery, onions, potato, olive oil), but they actually taste like real food—not canned mush.

- Golden Lentil Indian Dal
-
This cannot substitute anything you would get at an Indian restaurant, alright? The spices are too mild, in terms of heat and overall flavor. We have to start there, because if that’s going to immediately turn you off of this, we understand. But there’s plenty to like about it otherwise! It’s basically an extra creamy lentil soup with turmeric, ginger, and cumin (a lot of cumin) thrown in for a little pizzazz. It isn’t super heavy despite being so creamy, which we really appreciate. It’s not the best Amy’s soup you can buy, but I can see this being a favorite for someone.

- Thai Coconut Tom Kha Phak
-
Look, Amy’s might not totally stick the landing with all the different international soups she puts out, but I have to give her props for going there. I think this scratches an itch for tom kha, even if it’s not the best iteration of it. I can appreciate that the veggies are plentiful, larger, and not diced, making it feel closer to something homemade. The base of the soup needs a little bit of work—with more lime and lemongrass, we could really be in business. Critiques aside, it’s yummy and filling. If we didn’t know what the real thing should taste like, we wouldn’t be so hard on it.

- Tortilla Soup
-
Am I eating canned soup, or did a waiter just ladle me a bowl of tortilla soup at a cheap Mexican restaurant? I simply can’t tell the difference, which can only mean a couple of things: I’m bad at my job, I haven’t been to a Mexican restaurant in a while, or Amy’s Tortilla Soup is pretty darn yummy. All might be true at the same time, but with corn masa and fire-roasted veggies, this hits all the right flavor notes for me. I wish it was spicier, but that’s what my spice cabinet is for. Add some shredded Mexican blend on top and you’re good. (This is the best Amy’s soup of the bunch in my personal opinion—but I’m being nice to my colleagues here and letting this ranking reflect the whole taste-testing team. You’re welcome, everyone.)

- Dal Makhani
-
Gosh, this soup is so creamy. And yes, that’s because it’s not vegan—there’s dairy cream and butter in this one. Sadly, that’s the beauty of dairy, especially when directly compared to other vegan options in the same taste test. It makes everything richer, bolder. It deepens the savory blend of different beans (urad beans, kidney, and pinto) and allows them to really harmonize with the Indian spices. Not to be a broken record, but while yummy, Amy’s dal makhani is not going to do any justice to an authentic version of the dish. We have to just accept that. But it does do justice to Amy’s as a brand; it’s easily one of the best Amy’s soup flavors you can pick up.

- Thai Curry & Sweet Potato Soup
-
I, like our editor-in-chief Justine Sterling, am very wary of sweet potatoes in a recipe. I don’t know what it is about them, but they really overpower the flavor of anything they’re in—which is not, thankfully, the case here. This bright, coconut milk-based curry has a nice blend of savory lentils and leeks and a light sweetness from the sweet potato. It’s definitely one of the best Amy’s soups we’ve tried to date, and it just might have something to do with how fatty it is (with 25g of fat in one can!).

- French Country Vegetable
-
“I love that bland soup,” says Gwynedd Stuart after a few sips of Amy’s creamy and hearty French Country Vegetable Soup. That pretty much sums up the experience here, and I really mean that in the best way possible. Beans, red rice, and a whole host of softly cooked diced veggies all combine to somehow make one deeply savory, slightly sweet flavor. Every sip is a hug. I love the little mushroom slices and the simple fact that I’m not eating veggie skins. If you’re looking for something simple and filling that you can sop up with a piece of buttered, crusty bread, this is the best Amy’s soup.
