We taste test a lot of frozen dinners here at Sporked. In recent months we’ve tried meals from Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine, Marie Callender’s—and I have to be honest, most of the time, there are more duds than winners. Our taste test of Amy’s frozen meals was unique in that respect—we actually REALLY liked a lot of these.

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: Wasn’t Amy’s embroiled in a labor dispute? Yes, they were. Beginning in January 2022, the brand’s employees called for a boycott until the company provided safer working conditions, increased wages, and better health insurance. The boycott was effective, and in June 2024, employees announced that many of their demands were met and the boycott ended. This is good news for the employees, obviously, and also for people who are in the market for vegan and vegetarian frozen meals who also care about labor rights. All of Amy’s frozen meals are vegetarian, and a lot of them are vegan. Even if you eat meat, you have to admit that the meat in frozen dinners is usually pretty foul. I think that the best Amy’s frozen meals are so good in part because they are vegetarian. Of the 13 we taste tested, here are the six we really loved.

Amy’s Bowls 3 Cheese & Kale Bake

Out of the microwave, this Amy’s frozen meal looks pale. Know why? It’s absolutely COVERED in cheese. You get gluten free rotini pasta, a creamy sauce, bits of kale, and lots and lots of nutty, aged cheese. Maybe a fontina or parmesan? Something “footy,” as my colleague Jordan Myrick put it. And even if you are kale averse, you’ll like this—the greens are firm but not tough. And really it’s nice to feel like you’re getting a side of vitamins with your cheesy pasta. And we can’t stress this enough: The gluten free pasta in Amy’s meals is really good. We all agreed we wouldn’t know it was gluten free if the box didn’t say so—and that’s really saying something.

amy's frozen meals tortilla casserole review

Amy’s!

Amy’s Bowls Tortilla Casserole & Black Beans

This Amy’s frozen meal looks like a sloppy mess—and it is, in a good way. “Tortilla casserole” is essentially Amy’s way of saying “chilaquiles,” but with scrambled tofu rather than eggs. It’s flavorful, mushy, cheesy, and satisfying. The side of beans adds some nice bulk, too. Of all the meals we tried, this is the best Amy’s frozen meal to eat for breakfast.

Amy’s!

Amy’s Chinese Noodles & Veggies in a Cashew Cream Sauce

This was the best Amy’s frozen meal we tried that’s totally vegan—honestly, it would probably be worse if it wasn’t. There’s nice, firm tofu instead of mushy, flavorless chicken. The noodles, which are kind of like lo mein noodles, are springy and lovely. I would not have guessed they’re gluten free. The cashew cream sauce is lovely—it makes the dish taste like sesame noodles from an East Coast Chinese restaurant but with more veggies. There’s probably too much carrot in this bowl, but we like the other stuff—broccoli, edamame, and mushrooms. Very lovely!

Amy's frozen meals penne with mushrooms & spinach review

Amy’s Bowls Penne with Mushrooms & Spinach

I do wish that this Amy’s frozen meal was made with rotini instead of penne (for maximum sauce absorption), but it’s still great. It has a lot of spinach and a lot of mushrooms. The mushrooms contribute so much savory, earthy flavor. The sauce looks creamy on the box, but it’s sort of oily once it’s cooked. That’s okay because this dish is still very cheesy and umami and delicious. And I like that it has so much spinach but doesn’t have that weird tang that frozen spinach can have sometimes. This is for unrepentant mushroom lovers like me.

Amy’s Cheese Enchilada

In a separate taste test of frozen enchiladas, these were our top pick. They really taste pretty much exactly like cheese enchiladas from a bean-y, cheesy Mexican restaurant. The cheese is goopy and plentiful, and the enchilada sauce is zesty and well-spiced without tasting like a total cumin bomb. This is such a simple and good frozen meal.

Amy’s Bowls Broccoli & Cheddar Bake

Sometimes, when I rave about a product a lot, I get a little scared that it’s not actually as good as I thought it was. Like, maybe I tasted it on a day when we tasted a bunch of stuff that was really gross. And then I keep endorsing it and being like…is it good? But this is! The texture of the pasta is incredible. The sauce is so cheesy. The broccoli is firm and has some crispness. Jordan said it was the best frozen broccoli they’ve ever had in a frozen meal. This was already our favorite gluten free frozen dinner and one of the best vegetarian frozen meals from a previous taste test—and now we know it’s the best Amy’s frozen meal, period.

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
