The Only bettergoods Ice Cream at Walmart We Recommend

Earlier this year, Walmart launched their bettergoods line of foods and drinks. The pleasingly packaged products are, supposedly, “elevated eats,” according to Walmart. It’s the brand’s appeal to “foodies.” We tried Walmart’s line-up of bettergoods frozen pizzas and some of them were pretty darn good. So, we came to this tasting of all the bettergoods ice cream (and it is bettergoods ice cream, not better goods ice cream) with elevated expectations.

My colleague Gwynedd Stuart and I tasted each pint of the regular dairy-full ice cream as well as bettergoods’ plant based ice cream, judging them on texture (we’re looking for creamy) and flavor (we’re looking for lots of it and we don’t want it to be fake). Is this the best new Walmart ice cream around? Will you be ditching Haagen-Dazs for this budget-friendly buy? Spoiler alert: You will not. But there are a few flavors that are worth a try—particularly when it comes to the plant-based pints. Read on for our bettergoods ice cream review and ranking.

bettergoods Mint Chocolate Chip Oatmilk

Best Classic Flavor

We don’t currently have a plant based ice cream in our ranking of the best mint chocolate chip ice cream. We tried some vegan pints, but none were worthy of our recommendation. That may change, with the addition of this bettergoods plant based ice cream. It’s sweet and minty but not in a toothpaste-y way thanks to the bittersweet planks of dark chocolate.

bettergoods Salted Caramel Oatmilk

Best Plant-Based Caramel

bettergoods Salted Caramel Oatmilk

In my opinion, oat milk is the best milk for plant based ice cream. You can get super creamy ice cream without any unnecessary coconut flavor. And this plant based Walmart ice cream is a prime example. It’s crazy creamy. And it’s also super-duper caramelly. Like, you really need to love caramel to like this ice cream. But if you do, oh boy, consider your vegan caramel prayers answered. It’s quite sweet (makes sense, since caramel is mostly sugar), but it has a hint of burnt caramel flavor that helps balance it out.

bettergoods Blueberry Swirl Oatmilk

Best Fruity

bettergoods Blueberry Swirl Oatmilk

When I was little, I lived near a blueberry farm that sold fresh blueberry ice cream in the summer. It was so good. And while this Walmart ice cream isn’t as good as homemade blueberry ice cream from an idyllic blueberry patch, it’s pretty darn good. It’s somewhere between an ice cream and a sorbet, and it packs actual blueberry flavor. It’s tangy and tart and sweet. It’s super refreshing. Another quality plant based ice cream from bettergoods! Are you seeing a pattern?

bettergoods Dulce de Leche

Best of the Best

bettergoods Dulce de Leche

Pattern broken! Because the best bettergoods ice cream we tried is this totally dairy-full Dulce de Leche. It’s not really a faithful dulce de leche flavor, but it does taste like a plussed-up vanilla with a hint of rich, slightly burnt caramel. And that is very satisfying. It’s a bit like if Werther’s made ice cream. (How good would that be?) It’s definitely the best bettergoods ice cream at Walmart to try if you’re all about that cow milk. And it’d be pretty spectacular as a base for an ice cream sundae.
