7 Best Boxes of Valentine’s Day Chocolates

The best box of Valentine’s Day chocolates is all about two things: presentation and variety. These iconic heart-shaped containers should look impressive and have a wide variety of chocolates (not to mention a very clear map showing which chocolate is which, so you don’t wind up biting into orange creme when you really wanted caramel). Seriously, if you want just one type of chocolate candy and don’t care what the packaging looks like, save yourself some cash and just buy a bag of fun size Twix or something! Since this is a special day and we’re probably gifting, Valentine’s Day chocolates should feel elegant and romantic. Ultimately, the best box of chocolates should be the perfect sweets to give your sweet.

In three separate taste tests, we gathered every Valentine’s Day chocolate box we could find at our local grocery stores and had a very informative (and romantic) afternoon tasting them all. These are the best Valentine’s Day chocolates to buy this year, whether you’re treating someone else or you just need something sweet to eat while you watch romcoms on the couch.

Best Flavors

Dunkin’ Chocolates Donut-Flavored Filled Chocolates

There are a few different versions of this box of Valentine’s Day chocolates, but the Dunkin’ mix we tried came with little bonbons with three flavors of filling: Boston Creme, Red Velvet, and Brownie Batter. There was only one Boston Creme candy in the bunch, which was annoying because that was my personal favorite. But they’re all good—the fillings are creamy and flavorful and definitely nod at their respective flavor inspirations even if it isn’t immediately obvious what they’re channeling. Be forewarned: If aesthetics are important to you when picking the best box of chocolates, pick something else on this list. This isn’t a heart-shaped box of chocolates in the traditional sense. It’s a box full of wrapped chocolates with a heart-shaped panel on the front. If that won’t be a letdown for your Valentine, this is a fun and unique option. —Gwynedd Stuart

Best Truffles

Lindt Gourmet Truffles

Lindt Lindor truffles rule. I realize that this heart-shaped box of them isn’t exactly what many people are looking for when they’re looking for the best box of chocolates, but if you or the person you’re shopping for really don’t like all those cloying fillings—coconut, orange creme, raspberry goo—and just want more chocolate inside your chocolate, this is a great assortment of Valentine’s Day chocolates. The box comes with milk chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, extra dark chocolate, and dark chocolate caramel truffles, and they’re all luscious and satisfying. We tried another truffle-centric assortment (Hershey’s Pot of Gold), but it just couldn’t live up to Lindt! —Gwynedd Stuart

Best for Ferrero Fans

Ferrero Collection Grand Assortment

You’re probably familiar with Ferrero Rocher, the crispy-crunchy chocolate candies that have a whole hazelnut in the middle. But were you aware that there’s a whole line of Ferrero candies? Well, this Valentine’s Day chocolate box has ‘em all: Ferrero Manderly, Ferrero Cappuccino, Raffaello, Ferrero Rondnoir, and regular Ferrero Rocher. Rafaello is for the white chocolate lovers—it involves almonds and coconut flakes. Manderly (which sounds so fancy!) has an almond cream filling and an “almond heart.” Rondnoir has a dark chocolate cream and a dark chocolate pearl in the center. And the Ferrero Cappuccino has coffee-flavored filling in a crunchy shell. If your lover loves Ferrero Rocher, this is the best box of chocolates to broaden their Ferrero horizons. —Gwynedd Stuart

Best Classic

Whitman’s Sampler Assorted Milk & Dark Chocolates

Whitman’s and Russell Stover make very similar boxes of Valentine’s Day chocolates. They’re both delicious, diverse, and available nationwide. Sporked managing editor Gwynedd Stuart is a diehard Whitman’s gal. But Liv Averett, Sporked’s graphic designer, leaned more toward Russell Stover. I found them to be almost identical in quality, and I suspect I’m right, given that Russel Stover acquired Whitman’s back in 1993. We all agreed, however, that we’d be thrilled to receive either box of chocolates. The assortment contains chocolate nut fudge, vanilla cream, nut caramel, sea salt caramel, brownie batter, peanut butter, coconut creme, and a plain milk chocolate square with Whitman’s messenger mascot on it. —Jordan Myrick

Ghirardelli Signature Collection

This is the best box of chocolates we tried three years in a row. Ghirardelli’s assortment is so fancy and unique! The chocolates look like little heart-shaped cups and they’re so decadent. If they didn’t come in a Ghirardelli box, I would think these chocolates were handmade by a local chocolatier at a fancy, local candy store. The chocolates come in chocolate hazelnut truffle with toffee bits, milk chocolate caramel truffle, chocolate almond truffle, and dark chocolate and cacao nib truffle.
