5 Best Fall Soups to Take You from Summer to Spooky Season

Much like George Costanza, we’re shifting into soup mode over here at Sporked. Yes, we’re in Southern California, where summer lasts until late November, but once Labor Day rolls around, we’ve got our can openers and big spoons ready for the best fall soups at the grocery store. We’ve rounded up some of the best canned soups we’ve tried in our taste tests, but focused on ones that have an element or ingredient that still says summer. Like a hoodie or a light pashmina, these are our favorite fall-to-summer soups.

Trader Joe’s Lobster Bisque

Though it fell just short of taking the top spot in our ranking of the best soup at Trader Joe’s, this lobster bisque still deserves a spot on our list of the best fall soups. It’s rich and fatty, and even though it isn’t exactly bursting with lobster meat, it’s full of seafood-y flavor. Plus, this is creamy without being thick like a chowder—a perfect soup to help you transition into sweater weather season.

Panera Bread Autumn Squash Soup

When you think of a “fall soup,” butternut squash probably comes to mind. And if you’ve got squash soup on the brain, you have to try Panera’s Autumn Squash Soup. Why is it called “autumn” squash soup? Well, because it contains butternut squash and pumpkin. That’s two good gourds for the price of one. This soup perfectly balances sweet and savory, and has just the right amount of creaminess. Even if you aren’t usually into butternut squash soup, try Panera’s and have your life changed forever.

Signature Cafe Broccoli Cheddar Soup

If you shop at an Albertsons-owned grocery store, we have good news: Their proprietary brand Signature Select makes broccoli cheese soup so good it beat out Panera’s iconic broccoli cheddar soup in our taste test. Another fall staple, this soup isn’t just creamy and cheesy: it’s smoky, tangy, balanced, and gluten-free. It’s the best fall soup if you really want to just eat a big bowl of melted cheese but couldn’t justify doing that unless some broccoli was in the mix.

Andersen’s Creamy Split Pea Soup

If you’ve ever taken a road trip through California, you’ve probably seen (or even tried) Pea Soup Andersen’s. There’s even an inn you can stay at, though I can say from personal experience the restaurant and living spaces have little in common (a win, if you’re averse to pea soup). A staple landmark throughout the state, it’s no surprise that this soup topped the split pea soup rankings and also makes our list of the best fall soup. You can’t go wrong with a rich, creamy pea soup, and wiith Andersen’s, you get a taste of California history to go with it.

Gardein Plant-Based Chick’n Noodl’

Ah, chicken noodle soup, the stuff of fond childhood memories. It’s even more impressive that this specific one is vegan, but doesn’t compromise when it comes to  flavor. It’s not the overall best chicken noodle soup we tried (Rao’s wins that one), but the fact that it tastes almost identical to real chicken noodle soup without involving any meat or chicken broth should be reason enough for it to become your new fall favorite. Hearty and umami flavors blend beautifully in this soup—crack open a can and enjoy those warm fall vibes!
