I thought it would be difficult to identify the best Himalayan pink salt. But after tasting through eight pink salt brands, it was actually pretty obvious. Sure, all the salts taste salty, but to me, pink Himalayan salt should taste different.

What I looked for in the best Himalayan pink salt

Pink Himalayan salt isn’t just pink because it’s pretty. It’s pink because it contains lots and lots of different minerals, including potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Those minerals give it that distinct, coral-pink color and a more complex flavor than regular table salt, which is generally more processed than pink salt.

Along with a more complex flavor, the best pink Himalayan salt should have a good texture. I tasted fine pink salt and pink salt from grinders, and with both I was looking for a touch of crunch.

And it better be pink. I tried a few pink salts so pale they might as well have been sea salt. If I’m paying a premium for pink salt, then it better be at least as pink as that pony club everyone’s been talking about.

How I tasted pink Himalayan salt

I tried all of these salts on their own—straight off a plate—as well as sprinkled onto bread buttered with unsalted butter.

Here’s the best pink Himalayan salt to buy—both in a shaker and in a grinder. (And if you’re looking for the best flake salt, we’ve got you covered there, too.)

Private Selection Pink Himalayan Salt Grinder

This Kroger brand pink Himalayan salt grinder cracks pale pink, super soft salt granules. It has  a mild flavor—but it still has flavor beyond salt. There’s a touch of tang. The salt dissolves quickly for instant flavoring. It’s the best brand of Himalayan pink salt to buy if you like your salt fresh ground.

Best of the Best

This pink Himalayan salt had the most flavor out of the bunch. It’s hard to describe the exact flavor, but it’s a full, round, warming flavor. It’s a little toasty and extremely savory—not just salty, but savory and rich. And it has a beautiful light pink hue. You get good little bits of crunch with each bite, and it complements food without becoming the star of the show. It supports and elevates rather than distracts. There’s pink salt out there with better branding and snazzier packaging, but this is the best brand of Himalayan pink salt I tried.

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
