If you buy frozen breakfast food, you know Jimmy Dean. The man. The myth. The ground meat legend. He was literally a country music star who became America’s preeminent sausage magnate. I wouldn’t know one of his songs if Jimmy sang it to me himself from beyond the grave, but I’m now deeply familiar with his work in the frozen aisle.

In a recent taste test, we stocked up on a variety of Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches, Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls, breakfast burritos, and more; we cooked them in the microwave; and then we tasted them side by side. Here are the six best Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast items to buy.

Jimmy Dean Sausage & Gravy Breakfast Bowl

When we did a full taste test of frozen breakfast bowls, Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls didn’t top our ranking—BUT we learned a valuable lesson, which is that country gravy makes everything a little better—especially breakfast bowls, which can turn out kinda dry without it. Not to be confused with the Jimmy Dean biscuit and gravy bowl (which is much too weird), the sausage and gravy breakfast bowl combines scrambled eggs, cheese, potatoes, and sausage. It’s a big bowl of slop, but it’s filling, comforting, pleasantly salty slop.

Jimmy Dean Delights Egg’wich Bacon, Spinach, Caramelized Onion, and Parmesan Egg Frittatas with Turkey Sausage and Cheese

This bread-less, low-cal Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich looks like a nightmare. The egg patties that serve as the “bun” are greenish gray from the spinach in the mix, but they genuinely taste good. The flavor reminded me a lot of quiche. It’s a great low carb, high protein breakfast option, but as my colleague Jordan Myrick pointed out, if the idea of holding a straight-up egg sandwich gives you the willies, you can always stuff this whole thing inside an English muffin (we even found good gluten free English muffins in our ranking if that’s a concern).

jimmy dean ham and cheese croissant review

Jimmy Dean!

Jimmy Dean Croissant Ham & Cheese

Like a lot of microwave breakfast sandwiches, you gotta eat this sucker quick before it hardens, but if you make haste, it’s kind of great. The ham is a little tough, but right out of the microwave, the croissant is really nice and squishy—nothing like an actual croissant, of course, but a lot like the squishy bun on a Burger King Croissan’wich. It’s super simple and you don’t really miss the egg, which tends to be spongy and flavorless anyway.

Jimmy Dean!

Jimmy Dean Griddle Cake Maple Pancakes & Sausage

This is another good Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich, especially if you don’t eat egg and cheese. If you do eat egg and cheese, get the sandwich in the #1 spot on this list, but if you don’t or simply prefer a simple sandwich, this is a tasty option. I miss the textural variety and the added salt of the cheese, but the fluffy pancakes and nicely spiced sausage shine. Also, if you’re a meat freak, it seemed to me that the sausage patty in this version of the sandwich was a little thicker to compensate for a lack of other ingredients.

jimmy dean spicy crispy chicken honey biscuit review

Jimmy Dean!

Jimmy Dean Spicy Crispy Chicken Honey Biscuit

Okay, let me begin by saying that the biscuit part of this Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich is not good, but as a full package, this is great. The chicken patty is thick and substantial. I did get some gristle which I didn’t love, but I’ll chalk that up to an error. The breading is nice and light and it’s actually spicy. We cooked this in the microwave, but you can also take the sandwich apart and cook the chicken patty in the air fryer if you want more crisp. Franky, I think it’s fine as is. Again, the biscuit itself is nothing to rave about, but this is a tasty little sandwich.

jimmy dean maple griddle cake sausage egg and cheese review

Jimmy Dean!

Jimmy Dean Maple Griddle Cake Sausage Egg & Cheese

In a previous taste test, we established that microwave pancakes are pretty damn good, but the combo of squishy pancakes, salty sausage, egg, cheese, and maple syrup flavor in this Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich is outstanding. These taste buttery and satisfying. The sausage is a perfect complement to the sweet pancakes. The egg doesn’t contribute much—in any of these tbh—but the cheese really does, giving it a nice punch of salt. We like the plain sausage griddle cake, but this one has so much more variety of flavors and textures. It’s such a fun breakfast and it’s the best Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich we tried.

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
