What would you say is the best ravioli filling? You answer might depend on your mood or you might be a dyed-in-the-wool fan of cheese ravioli, and either way we’re pasta positive and we’re here to direct you toward the best ravioli at the grocery store, from the best frozen ravioli (cheese AND beef!), as well as the best mushroom ravioli and even the best toasted ravioli.

Best Cheese Ravioli

Sprouts Three Cheese Ravioli

Is there anything more comforting than a big ol’ bowl of cheese ravioli? Frankly, we wish this package of Sprouts cheese ravioli was bigger because, well, we have big bowls. These ravs are stuffed with a creamy filling that perfectly blends ricotta, provolone, and “grated” cheeses (the nutty flavor indicates it’s definitely parmesan-esque). The pasta is SO tender and has that homemade texture and bite. Plus, these cook in just a few minutes since they’re refrigerated rather than frozen. We recognize that Sprouts is a smaller grocery chain than, say, Walmart, so if you don’t have a Sprouts in your area, skip to the best frozen cheese ravioli on this list.

Best Frozen Ravioli (Cheese)

Celentano Cheese Ravioli

A lot of people grew up on Celentano cheese ravioli (including some Sporked staffers) and we’re pleased to report that they’re still really good. A perfect comfort food with the right red sauce; we recommend something chunky and clingy since these are pretty slick. They’re the best cheese ravioli for people who like thicker sheets of pasta—they’re definitely a little chunkier than refrigerated ravioli, but that doesn’t detract from the creamy, herb-filled, tasty filling.

Best Frozen Ravioli (Beef)

Celentano Beef Ravioli

Based on our taste tests, Celentano is out here making the best frozen ravioli, period. Their beef ravioli aren’t quite as good as their cheese ravioli, but these are still great. They’re huge and the beef-parmesan-ricotta-parsley-garlic-onion filling scratches pretty much every itch. They’re great with marinara (duh), but we say go rogue and try these with a creamy vodka sauce

Best Sausage Ravioli

Rana Italian Sausage Ravioli

You’re going to see a lotta Rana on this list going forward. If you’ve seen their filled pastas in the refrigerated section and you’ve been trepidatious because they’re pricier than a lot of what you’ll find in the frozen aisle, we can honestly vouch for most of them. The pasta is delicate and the sausage filling has all the right spices. Our only critique is that the filling is on the pasty side, but that’s not going to keep us from devouring a whole bowl of these suckers.

Best Chicken Ravioli

Rana Chicken & Roasted Garlic Ravioli

Generally, you don’t think of chicken as the most flavorful food in the world, but these Rana chicken ravioli are absolutely flavor bombs. The filling is so sweet and savory that it reminded our taste tester Jessica Block of teriyaki-pineapple chicken sausages. Does that sound weird? Sure. Do we want to eat ravioli that taste like that? Yes, definitely. Top these with some of the best alfredo sauce and you’re eating good.

Best Mushroom Ravioli

Rana Mushroom Ravioli

We love these mushroom ravioli. The cheeses in the filling—ricotta, mascarpone, and gouda, weirdly enough—are assertive but not so strong that you can’t taste the mushrooms. There’s lots of mushroom flavor in these little suckers, and you even get some nice toothsome pieces of mushroom in the mix. They’re not overstuffed, so they cook nicely, too—they don’t burst in the boiling water (we taste tested a lot of refrigerated ravs that really couldn’t hold up to a whopping four minutes in boiling water). As the ravioli cool, the filling definitely stiffens a little and I wouldn’t complain about it staying a litttttle creamier, but these are the best mushroom ravioli we’ve tried so far.

Best Toasted Ravioli

Bertolli Toasted Three Cheese Ravioli

Our apologies to St. Louisans, but frozen food brands are giving your beloved toasted ravioli a bad name. Man, we’ve had some real duds over the years—they’re always dry, light on filling, and coated in way too much breading. These Bertolli toasted ravioli are the only ones we’ve tried that we thought were worth recommending. The breading—while thick—is nicely seasoned without tasting like a mouthful of dried herbs, and beneath it, you can still enjoy the chew of the pasta itself. The filling is flavorful and there’s actually enough of it. Someday we’ll have a Sporked field trip to St. Lou to try the genuine article, but in the meantime, we’re glad these exist.

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
