The Best Taco Chain In The US Is Both Expected And Surprising

The United States doesn’t want for taco chains; there are dozens of them, from the super-sized likes of Taco Bell and Chipotle to smaller outfits that may have a handful of locations scattered across a city or region. They can also vary as much as tacos themselves, with concepts, fillings, flavor profiles, and service styles changing considerably from place to place.

As such, judging which one is the best is a tough task, and there’s, of course, no one universal answer. According to a recent survey, though, one beats out the rest by a big margin. And we’ll tell you which one that is…right now.

The Winner Takes It All

It’s Taco Bell. The biggest taco chain in the US has also been named the best by customers in research published by YouGov in April 2026, which ranked people’s preferred restaurant chains by cuisine category, demographic, and perceptions of quality and value. The YouGov report acquired responses from approximately 44,000 customers from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, and then collated the data to provide a representative snapshot of people’s dining habits and preferences today.

In the taco/burrito chain category, 30.3% of respondents rated Taco Bell as the best of them all. The second-best-rated chain was Chipotle, which was voted the best by 20.6% of customers. There was then a significant jump to the final three, rounding out the top five: Moe’s Southwest Grill (5.6%), Del Taco (5.5%), and QDoba (4.3%).

Where Else Did Taco Bell Place In The Report?

The restaurant was the third-most-popular choice in the 18-29 age group, coming after McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A in first and second place, respectively, and it was the second-most-popular amongst 30-44 year-olds, after McDonald’s. Maybe the fact that you can get married at Taco Bell swayed it for the millennials slightly, with their eyes on a taco-fuelled wedding. Probably not. But the fact that you can get married there is pretty wild, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

Taco Bell also ranked highly in value perceptions. Customers voted it as the restaurant with the second-best bang for their buck, after Wendy’s – pretty interesting, considering that some now think it might be charging too much. On the quality front, though, it didn’t even crack the top ten (in case you were wondering, Chick-fil-A won there, with 37.3% of people saying it had the best quality fast food around).

So, Why Is This Both Expected And Surprising?

Well, kinda for the same reason: Because Taco Bell is so big. Its inflated size in comparison to other taco chains means that it has a higher profile, more access to a wider customer base, and can therefore, perhaps, have a better chance of being people’s favorites. There’s also a case to be made that Taco Bell knows how to keep it interesting, with its constant stream of new tacos (even if customers aren’t convinced)

On the other hand, though, a chain of Taco Bell’s size will never deliver the same sense of authenticity and quality that other, smaller chains might provide – so on that front, the fact it’s dubbed the “best” should potentially be taken with a pinch of salt. But hey, the people have spoken, and we’re not going to push back against democracy.
