Whether you’re making tacos, burritos, or a weird, sad wrap filled with whatever you happen to have in the fridge, the best tortillas are key. We sat down for taste tests of pretty much every variety you can think of—corn tortillas, flour tortillas, low carb tortillas, even gluten free tortillas—and found the best of each. So, whether you’re looking for the best tortillas for tacos, the best tortillas for enchiladas, or the best tortillas for middle-of-the-night drunk quesadillas (don’t forget to turn off the stove!), there’s something for you on this list.
In order to find the best corn tortillas, we tried a lot of duds. These things can be stiff, dry, and downright flavorless if they aren’t done right. La Banderita landed at the top of our list after two separate taste tests because they’re soft, tasty, and taste great when you toast them over an open flame or in a skillet. These are the best tortillas for enchiladas or street tacos at home. Trust us.
Okay, these flour tortillas, which come uncooked, require about a minute and a half in a pan to achieve deliciousness, but we promise the extra time is worth it, even if you’re starving. You know that wonderful, almost flaky quality good, homemade flour tortillas have? That’s what you get here. They puff up and then deflate (don’t burn yourself on the steam they release!) and are ready to be filled with anything from authentic al pastor to ground beef made with a packet of store-bought taco seasoning mix. These are the best tortillas if you’re all about flour power.
Low carb tortillas can be pretty bad. A lot of them have a strange, tell-tale sweetness and others turn to stone when you cook them in a pan. Mission Carb Balance tortillas aren’t totally carb-free like some other brands, but they’re the best store bought tortillas if you’re watching your carb intake. They’re soft and have a neutral flavor that lets fillings shine. You can do a lot worse—believe us!
Gluten free tortillas can go in all sorts of directions. Some are made with rice flour, while others are made with modified food starch. These tortillas from Maria and Ricardo are made with quinoa flour, which gives them a nice, earthy flavor that beat out all the other gluten free tortillas we tried. These are definitely the best tasting tortillas if gluten is off the menu.
