There are plenty of good vegetarian frozen meals in the freezer aisle. But vegan frozen meals are another story. First of all, there just aren’t that many to begin with. And out of that meager selection, many of them are bland AF. How do I know? I grabbed all the vegan frozen meals I could find from our local grocery stores, zapped them in our office microwave, and gave them a taste. I did it all so that you don’t have to waste your money on the duds. Here are the best vegan frozen meals you can buy—including a vegan frozen breakfast that really rocked my world.

Saffron Vegetable Bibimbap

Best Vegan Rice Bowl

Saffron Vegetable Bibimbap

The box describes this vegan frozen meal as “white rice, tofu & vegetables in a fiery chili bibimbap sauce.” I’ll agree that there is white rice and tofu and vegetables. But a fiery sauce? Not so much. There’s a pleasant touch of heat to the savory gochujang sauce, but it’s definitely not fiery. Still, this rice bowl was good enough to make our ranking of the best vegan frozen meals, thanks to the tender, well-seasoned tofu, the quality of the vegetables, and the vibrant (if not funky enough for my tastes) sauce.

Blue Zones Kitchen Minestrone Pasta Bowl

Best Vegan Pasta Bowl

Blue Zones Kitchen Minestrone Pasta Bowl

If you’re a vegan because you really, really love vegetables, then this is the frozen vegan meal for you. It’s practically half pasta, half vegetables/beans. It might even be, like, 65% vegetables/beans. There’s carrots, garbanzo beans, red beans, tomato, and kale (probably the weakest ingredient of the bunch), all mixed with durum wheat pasta shells. I love the tomato, which helps bring everything together into a saucy, savory pasta. I think out of all the vegan frozen meals I’ve had, this would be the best one to have for a deskside lunch.

Purple Carrot Udon Noodle Bowl

Best Vegan Noodle Bowl

Purple Carrot Udon Noodle Bowl

When we tried the line-up of Purple Carrot frozen meals, this was the only one that really wowed us. The udon noodles are fat and chewy. The mix of carrots, edamame, and “beef” crumbles is super satisfying and there’s plenty of it. It’s the only frozen Purple Carrot meal we’ll be buying again and it’s the frozen meal to grab if you’re looking for a vegan meal that leans Asian.

Amy’s Breakfast Tofu Scramble

Best Vegan Frozen Breakfast

Amy’s Breakfast Tofu Scramble

I love this frozen vegan breakfast. You get shredded potatoes (my preferred type of hashbrown), tofu scrambled with spinach, zucchini, carrots, and mushrooms, and a really tasty tomato sauce on the side. More of that tomato sauce, please! It’s super bright and rich and oily in the best way. I gobbled this up and felt totally great afterwards. It’s the best vegan frozen breakfast we tried—but I’d also love to come home to this at 1 a.m.

Amy’s Tamale Verde Black Bean

Best of the Best

Amy’s Tamale Verde Black Bean

As we continue to work through all of Amy’s frozen meals, we continue to find out that we’re fans. The primarily vegetarian meals (mostly) taste great and seem to be made with quality ingredients. But this is one of the best meals to pick if you’re looking for a vegan frozen meal from Amy’s. The verde sauce is tangy and creamy. The masa of the tamale is tender. And the black bean and corn filling is really good—you don’t even miss the cheese. There’s also Spanish rice on the side, which tastes great and really fills out the meal. Even if you aren’t vegan, this is one of the most satisfying frozen vegan meals you can buy.

About the Author

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
