Campbell’s Is Putting an Iconic Soup and Sandwich Combo in a Can

Grilled cheese and tomato soup is a classic combo. Truly, there are few things more comforting than a crispy, gooey, steaming-hot grilled cheese dipped into a bowl of thick, creamy, savory tomato soup. But if you think “crisped bread and gooey cheese dipped in hot soup ” involves too much textural contrast (or you’re on a fully liquid diet), never fear: Campbell’s has released a new, limited-edition soup just for you. That’s right, you can now buy Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup flavored Campbell’s soup in a can, and, while I’m intrigued, I don’t totally know how to feel about it.

Is Campbell’s Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup going to be good for anything besides post-wisdom-tooth-removal-craving fulfillment? Will it fall into that little-explored sweet spot between tomato and broccoli cheddar? Or will this stuff simply be, in the words of Adam Driver, “good soup”?

I clearly have a lot of thoughts about whether or not this food should exist, but the fact of the matter is that it does, so let me hit you with some initial thoughts, a couple concerns, and all the details we could find on god’s green internet.

Let’s start with the details. This soup is made of “cream, Monterey Jack cheese, Cheddar cheese, and surface ripened semisoft cheese (think Muenster), in addition to the traditional condensed Campbell’s tomato soup ingredients,” according to food news Instagram account @Candyhunting. To me, this sounds like a tomato bisque plus nacho cheese. And I must say, if I imagine in my head what that would taste like, it doesn’t seem bad at all. In fact, I’d venture a guess that this stuff tastes really, really good. And, honestly, it looks great—in the promotional image on Campbell’s site, it looks pretty much exactly like Campbell’s tomato soup (in case you were slightly worried about sandwich lumps like I was). And just like Campbell’s condensed tomato soup, you can make it with a can of water or a can of milk if you want it to be even creamier.

If you’re reading this and feeling very ready to start eating a liquified sandwich with a spoon, Campbell’s says the limited-edition grilled cheese and tomato soup will be hitting shelves at “select grocery stores soon.” And if your grocery store isn’t one of the aforementioned “select” grocery stores? Well, you can enter a sweepstakes between now and March 20 for a chance to win a two pack of the soup. In the meantime, you’ll have to bust out the food processor to make your liquid sandwich dreams a reality.
