This New Chobani Creamer Puts a VERY Niche Coffeehouse Trend on the Map

At this very moment, I’m typing from a local coffee shop known for bringing the concept of “blueberry coffee” to this corner of Los Angeles (hi, Priscilla’s Gourmet Coffee) and using their objectively terrible wifi to research Chobani’s latest creamer flavor, American Blueberry. Serendipitous, isn’t it? (It’s not. I did this on purpose.)

Blueberry coffee has been a niche trend in brick-and-mortar coffee shops for a while now. 

When you hear the words “blueberry coffee,” you, a true American, probably imagine Dunkin’s Blueberry Donut or Blueberry Muffin speciality beverage. And while I think that’s beautiful, that’s not what I’m talking about here.

I only noticed this after moving to a big city, but blueberry coffee has been worming its way into trendy coffee shop menus for years now. (In LA, Priscilla’s “Blueberry Vanilla Iced Coffee” put them on the map; it’s listed as their specialty, “world-famous” menu item.) But what makes this trendy coffee drink feel kinda cool and unique and not like other girls is that the flavor doesn’t just come from the syrup…

It comes from the beans! 

Typically, “blueberry coffee” refers to coffee beans that either naturally develop berry-like tasting notes during the growing and roasting process, or beans intentionally flavored with blueberry oils or extracts after roasting. Some specialty coffee shops lean into those naturally fruity Ethiopian beans (e.g. beans from the Harrar or Yirgacheffe regions), while others infuse the beans with blueberry flavoring for a more obvious blueberry finish.

Chobani is the first creamer brand I’ve seen bring this coffee shop staple to the mainstream.  

They’re kinda trailblazing with this one, folks. I mean, obviously we’re talking about a coffee creamer here, not blueberry-flavored coffee beans. But this, to me, is a sign that they have their finger on the pulse. If you aren’t able to find blueberry coffee on a menu near you, now you can get a small taste the trend at home.

There are only five ingredients in Chobani’s American Blueberry Coffee Creamer. Wanna guess them? 

The ingredients are milk, cream, cane sugar, natural flavors, and blueberry juice concentrate.

Chobani is known for using real dairy cream and milk instead of oils or heavily processed cream substitutes, and they avoid gums and artificial thickeners in their creamers. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I’m not here to hate on gums and seed oils, okay. I’m not a food scientist. I really couldn’t care less. But I am glad we have at least one popular, easy-to-find creamer brand making fun, grabby flavors like S’mores and Cookies & Cream out of pure dairy. Chobani is a great option for those who are avoiding certain ingredients in their morning coffee, and that’s pretty neat.

When and where can I buy it? 

Chobani’s American Blueberry Creamer (named that to celebrate the 250 year anniversary of the country) comes out this June as a limited edition, Target-exclusive flavor. (Target lists the release date as June 14th on their site when you try to order it.)
